Senior Underwriter, Small Commercial
Liberty Mutual Insurance is seeking a remote Senior Underwriter to work primarily in the Mountain region, covering AZ, UT, CO, NM, NV, WY and surrounding states. This ranged posting will be based on candidate experience, with pay between $66,000 and $144,000 per year.
Job SummaryAs a Small Commercial Underwriter in property‑casualty insurance, you will develop, grow, and maintain diversified books of business. You will work closely with agents and brokers to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions, and negotiate deals that maximize profitability and meet business goals. This role offers autonomy, competitive compensation, and the opportunity to impact portfolio strategy.
Key Responsibilities- Write new accounts with premiums of $100,000 and below, ensuring a profitable book of property and casualty insurance.
- Crunch numbers and review data to determine risk selection, premiums, policies, and conditions, identifying opportunities for growth, profit, and diversification.
- Maintain and nurture relationships with agents and brokers, presenting proposals, negotiating deals, and obtaining approvals.
- Mentor underwriters, sharing best practices and identifying continuous‑improvement opportunities.
- Document account reviews, ensure state‑compliant sign‑offs, referrals, letters of authority, and follow underwriting guidelines.
Experience
- 3‑5+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience.
- Experience with multi‑line insurance products.
Skills
- Analytical, problem‑solving capabilities.
- Strong territory management skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to build rewarding relationships with agents, brokers, peer underwriters, underwriting assistants, and junior underwriters.
Knowledge
- Command of insurance finance and actuarial concepts.
- Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance products, underwriting, risk selection, pricing, and marketplaces, as well as regulatory issues in relevant territories.
- Understanding of contract language, including regulatory and policy differences among applicable states.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement processes and tools.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Chartered Property Casual Underwriter or other professional insurance designation preferred.
