Head Start Teacher (Teacher I) Role
Save the Children US is seeking a dedicated Head Start Teacher to develop and implement individualized and group educational plans for preschool children. The teacher will manage day‑to‑day classroom operations, ensure legal compliance with federal, state and local regulations, build strong family partnerships and maintain high program quality standards.
Essential Duties- Develop and implement individualized and group lesson plans that promote all developmental areas and prepare children for school readiness.
- Ensure a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
- Build effective relationships with children, families and the broader organization.
- Maintain accurate records on paper and in designated online systems while safeguarding confidentiality.
- Plan, conduct and document observations, assessments and screenings, and maintain a comprehensive portfolio assessment for each child.
- Keep the manager informed of important issues.
- Work with Assistant Teachers, Program Aides and Volunteers to develop their skills in classroom planning and activity execution.
- Engage children during all activities, providing constant supervision indoors and outdoors and ensuring a safe environment.
- Use the playground as an extension of the classroom, ensuring it is safe.
- Provide a balanced program of child‑initiated and teacher‑directed activities for individual, small group and large group learning.
- Assist with mealtime, teaching social and self‑help skills and sound nutritional practices.
- Assist children with health and personal habits such as rest, brushing teeth, diapering and toilet habits.
- Engage parents in their children’s education, encouraging classroom involvement and home activities.
- Create an inventory of all classroom equipment and supplies annually.
- Plan and conduct conferences (minimum
2) and home visits (minimum
2) to keep parents/caregivers well informed of their child’s progress and learning routines. - Work closely with the Manager of Education & Inclusion to develop and document progress on professional development plans, actively engaging in professional development activities to increase qualifications.
- Ensure program compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
- Maintain a constant state of alertness and active supervision to keep children safe, preventing any child from being left alone or unsupervised at any time.
- Document matching‑in‑kind activities, goods and services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Associate degree in child development, early childhood education or related field with early childhood equivalent coursework and experience teaching preschool‑age children.
- Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills with strong problem‑solving and time‑management abilities.
- Ability to follow established directions and take initiative.
- Knowledge of the purpose and framework of the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
- Sensitivity and confidentiality in dealing with children and families.
- Participation in professional development training, including first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required by state licensing and Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages used by children and families).
- Physical ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds and repetitive motions.
- Clear pre‑employment background check requirements, including child abuse registry checks and compliance with all health and safety requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and compliance with Save the Children motor vehicle policies.
- Preference for current and former Head Start/Early Head Start parents, where qualified.
- Time off: 11 paid holidays plus 10 days for winter break and 5 days for spring break, with additional 5 hours PTO.
