Assistant Teacher
Support the planning and implementation of Catalyst's programming for children ranging in age from infant, toddler, pre‑school, kinder, and school age depending on the location. Assistant Teachers facilitate a variety of age‑appropriate activities, support children’s social‑emotional development, and ensure continuous supervision in a healthy and safe environment.
Essential Functions- Support the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum linked to learning foundations that promote positive child development.
- Create intentional, enriched, and supportive learning environments that are age‑appropriate for all children.
- Provide excellent customer service by establishing authentic, culturally responsive relationships with children, families, schools, communities, and the center/classroom team.
- Maintain child health and safety through proper supervision, positive interactions, healthy habits, and compliance.
- Collaborate with staff to align workplace values, education, and experience for high‑quality programs.
- Positive interactions with children and youth.
- Maintain a kind, respectful, and safe emotional/physical environment.
- Be punctual and attend scheduled shifts consistently.
- Be active in outdoor and indoor programs.
- Be capable of meeting the needs of children up to 13 years of age and ensuring their safety.
- Follow safety guidelines, report incidents, and provide first aid as needed.
- Identify hazards and implement preventative actions (e.g., cones).
- Comfortable with occasional loud noise during outdoor activities.
- Perform frequent bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Lift, carry, and hold objects up to 15 lb with team effort.
- Work indoors or outdoors in all safe weather conditions.
- Traverse varied terrains and heights.
- Adapt to children’s physical levels during activities.
- Supervise field trips to aquatic parks, beaches, and trampoline parks.
Assistant Teachers support the classroom under the direction of another staff member. The role is intended as entry level.
EducationEducation and permit requirements may vary. Minimum of 6 post‑secondary semester units (or equivalent) in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field with grades of C‑ or better. Alternately, a regional occupation program certificate accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Experience & Skills- Preferred: 6 months in a group care environment providing consistent age‑group care/teaching.
- Effective problem‑solving, conflict resolution, classroom management, and communication with children and families.
- Strong organization, time management, curriculum, and assessment documentation.
- Ability to work alongside colleagues and maintain a professional team environment.
- Current adult and infant/child CPR & First Aid certification preferred.
- Multilingual preference based on center needs.
