Under general supervision, a Street Maintenance Worker III supervises and participates in the work of small work crews assigned to varied street maintenance tasks concerning the maintenance, construction and repair of City streets and right-of-ways, repairs and installation of city streetlights and underground utility locating; operates equipment related to work assigned.
The current vacancy is in the Facilities Maintenance division.
Positions in this class perform the skilled work of maintenance repair while fully participating in a crew as a lead worker. Incumbents can also be assigned to work with and monitor the work of small crews assigned to various locations that are within the same craft (e.g., paint, sign, and striping crews). When assigned, incumbents are expected to perform tasks in other maintenance areas at an unskilled or semi-skilled level, as a helper or independently.
Positions in this class perform work which has some variation and which allows or requires a limited range of choice in the application of defined methods or procedures. Incumbents receive instructions when tasks are assigned and have some latitude in selecting work methods. Work is generally reviewed from time to time while work is in progress.
Leads and participates in the maintenance, replacement, and repair of streetlight heads and associated components, streetlight poles, underground wiring, asphalt and concrete streets and in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, gutters, and culverts; fills and resurfaces holes, ditches, cracks, and service laterals by cutting out, back filling, and compacting, patching and rolling with oil, rock, asphaltic concrete and other permanent paving materials;
operates trucks, rollers, and other street construction equipment; perform underground utility locating; use of specialized equipment such as digital underground utility locator, crane truck, aerial bucket truck, winches, light meters, and VOHM meters; performs the more complex work in constructing forms, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete; troubleshooting and repair of complex issues with underground utilities; utilizing computer based mapping program for location, identification and ownership of streetlights, land parcels and vegetation;
setup of proper traffic control and flagging when necessary; inventory of street lighting and traffic signal supplies; inspection of tools for proper maintenance and operational use; training of lower level employees covering a wide variety of local, State and Federally mandated tasks and guidelines; inspects the work of others; works with contractors and utility providers; schedules work for crew; clearing ROW of debris from fallen trees, streetlights, meter pedestals, traffic control cabinets and traffic signals;
keeps accurate records according to State inspection process and procedures; utilizes computer based work order system for the assignment and completion of tasks; fires and operates various kinds of asphalt laying equipment; performs the more complex work in constructing forms, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete, excavating and filling trenches and culverts; supervises setting of lanterns and barricades; oversees field maintenance of tools and equipment;
performs a variety of general street maintenance work. Inspects public rights-of-way; leads and participates in the repair and replacement of street signs. Tops, prunes, sprays, maintains, and removes trees and shrubbery from City streets, parkways and grounds; conducts safety training; removes tree stumps and cuts up trees and branches for removal; leads and participates in weed abatement and graffiti abatement;
balls roots, transfers and replants trees; operates chain saws, pruners, trucks, hydraulic booms, skip loaders, boom and winch equipped trucks, wood chippers, and hydraulic aerial units; assists in conducting safety training programs; maintains daily work order records; maintains records on materials, equipment and labor used; operates City vehicles; and performs related work as required.
