Position: Utilities Maintenance Operator (All Tiers) (South County)

Job Overview

Utilities Maintenance Operator is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and construction of underground utility piping and appurtenances in field conditions for the Public Utilities Department.

Salary

$37,752 - $80,600

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience operating various hand tools and specialized, light, and heavy equipment. Preferably the candidate will possess knowledge of water and reclaimed water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Candidate must have the ability and willingness to work outside in a subtropical climate, under adverse weather conditions and high noise levels, lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders up to 35 feet, work in confined spaces and manholes, and work overtime, rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

The candidate must be able to respond to emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural/unnatural crises. Candidate must possess a valid Class “A” or “A”-Restricted Commercial Driver’s License with combination, air brakes, and tanker endorsements within one year from date of hire.

Job Distinctions
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Possession of a current State of Florida Class 3 Water Distribution System Operator License or higher (including Class 2 or Class
    1).
  • Or a valid Florida Class C or higher water treatment plant operator license.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs all phases of water, reclaimed water, and wastewater systems.
  • Inspects cross-connection controls; installs, evaluates, and repairs master meter assemblies, backflow prevention, and other devices.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions using manufacturers’ handbooks, codes, and standard operating procedures to ensure efficiency and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for safety/environmental hazards.
  • Operates specialized, light, and heavy equipment; locates and marks location of underground utilities.
  • Assists in setting up well-point systems for de-watering construction and maintenance sites; erects and dismantles shoring/trench boxes.
  • Assists in excavating work sites as required to facilitate installation, maintenance, or repair of lines and restores site to original condition when work is complete.
  • Utilizes the Job Qualification Standards, PUD Technical Specifications, Utility Accommodation Guide, Industry Publications and Standards, and other related guidance for subject/task fundamentals.
  • Provides instruction, guidance, and training to lower level staff as required.
  • Maintains all job-related credentials; works unsupervised and performs team leader duties while in the field, which includes enforcing policy, safety procedures, and training employees.
  • Provides information and responds as appropriate to public information requests.
  • Directs and/or oversees the work of other subordinate employees; provides instruction, guidance, and training as required.
  • Assumes responsibility of controlling emergencies when required.
  • Serves as the lead employee on project teams as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
