Role Context

The Land Surveyor provides independent surveying assurance for construction activities across a large-scale urban and public realm program. Reporting to the Resident Engineer or Construction Director, the position verifies contractor control networks, benchmarks, setting-out information, levels, coordinates, dimensions, and completed works before they progress through inspection and handover. Accurate surveying is critical to maintaining alignment between design intent and site execution.

The role also supports quantity verification, multidisciplinary coordination, as-built documentation, and final asset records while helping identify discrepancies before they create costly construction or interface problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the lead surveyor for site surveying, construction setting-out verification, and as-built control activities.
  • Supervise and coordinate the project survey team across assigned construction areas.
  • Review contractor surveying activities and verify compliance with project requirements.
  • Check control points, benchmarks, reference coordinates, and survey monuments established by contractors.
  • Confirm that survey control is correctly referenced to the approved project datum and coordinate grid.
  • Independently verify horizontal and vertical survey control before construction activities proceed.
  • Check contractor setting-out for roads, utilities, structures, hardscape, landscape elements, and public realm works.
  • Verify alignments, levels, coordinates, offsets, dimensions, slopes, and other construction geometry.
  • Conduct independent spot checks to confirm that completed works remain within approved tolerances.
  • Perform verification surveys when discrepancies or construction concerns are identified.
  • Compare actual site conditions against approved design information.
  • Identify differences between drawings, survey information, and constructed works and report them promptly.
  • Support discipline engineers in resolving setting-out and dimensional issues.
  • Review contractor survey reports for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Examine layout drawings and setting-out records before acceptance.
  • Review topographic surveys used for design verification and construction planning.
  • Assess contractor as-built surveys against completed site conditions.
  • Verify that submitted coordinates, elevations, dimensions, and reference information are complete.
  • Maintain organised survey records for future verification and final handover.
  • Retain field notes, calculations, observations, and supporting survey information.
  • Ensure digital and hard-copy records remain traceable throughout construction.
  • Coordinate surveying requirements with roads engineers.
  • Support structural teams with setting-out and dimensional verification.
  • Work with wet and dry utility engineers to verify utility alignments and levels.
  • Coordinate survey interfaces affecting drainage, chambers, ducts, pipelines, and utility corridors.
  • Support hardscape and landscape teams with accurate positioning of public realm elements.
  • Help identify spatial conflicts between different disciplines before construction progresses.
  • Provide survey information required to support interface management and clash avoidance.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and communicate survey constraints or required actions.
  • Use total stations for precise construction setting-out and verification.
  • Operate GPS and GNSS equipment for coordinate establishment and site surveying.
  • Use digital levels for accurate elevation transfer and verification.
  • Apply laser instruments and other surveying equipment where appropriate.
  • Ensure survey instruments are calibrated in accordance with required schedules.
