Role Context

The Design Manager provides day-to-day leadership across multidisciplinary infrastructure design activities, helping project teams move efficiently from early development through formal reviews, approvals, and delivery. Working with senior management, consultants, technical specialists, stakeholders, and delivery teams, the role ensures design information is coordinated, technically complete, and issued in line with programme requirements. Strong management of design risks, interfaces, approvals, and technical records helps prevent downstream construction issues, maintain decision‑making momentum, and protect overall project quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Senior Management and the Senior Design Manager with the coordination and assurance of design delivery across all project stages.
  • Manage multidisciplinary design activities across assigned projects, packages, and asset scopes.
  • Coordinate design consultants and technical teams to maintain alignment with approved briefs and project requirements.
  • Review design submissions for technical quality, completeness, coordination, and readiness for approval.
  • Monitor consultant deliverables against agreed schedules, milestones, and stage gate requirements.
  • Ensure review comments and outstanding actions are addressed within required timelines.
  • Support resolution of design clashes between disciplines and project systems.
  • Coordinate responses to technical queries affecting design progression.
  • Assist teams in resolving constructability concerns before they create delivery or construction constraints.
  • Maintain visibility of key design decisions and ensure outcomes are clearly communicated.
  • Maintain design trackers covering submissions, comments, approvals, and outstanding requirements.
  • Manage action logs and follow up responsibilities assigned during coordination meetings.
  • Maintain design registers, approval workflows, and technical records.
  • Apply approved design management templates, tools, methodologies, and reporting procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with established design management processes.
  • Prepare consistent design progress information for management reporting.
  • Identify delayed approvals or decisions that could affect programme performance.
  • Ensure technical records remain accurate, traceable, and accessible to authorised project teams.
  • Coordinate interfaces between engineering disciplines, infrastructure systems, assets, consultants, and delivery teams.
  • Identify dependencies between separate design packages and technical scopes.
  • Ensure interface responsibilities are clearly assigned and monitored through resolution.
  • Support integration of civil, structural, utilities, landscape, architectural, and other relevant disciplines.
  • Coordinate information where adjacent assets or infrastructure systems interact.
  • Help resolve inconsistencies between consultant submissions and wider project requirements.
  • Promote coordinated solutions that support constructability and efficient delivery.
  • Identify design-related risks, assumptions, constraints, and dependencies.
  • Maintain design risk information and track mitigation actions.
  • Highlight unresolved technical issues that could create programme, cost, quality, or delivery impacts.
  • Coordinate with consultants and internal stakeholders to develop practical mitigation measures.
  • Monitor implementation of agreed technical actions.
  • Escalate material design issues to senior management when intervention is required.
  • Support timely decisions by providing clear information on options, risks, and consequences.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, support functions, consultants, and project teams.
  • Coordinate technical reviews and ensure required stakeholders provide input within agreed timelines.
