Role Context The Design Manager will support the Planning and Design Management function by controlling the flow and coordination of multidisciplinary design information across assigned projects, packages, or asset scopes. The role will work closely with senior design leadership to ensure consultants and technical teams deliver coordinated, complete, and review-ready design outputs at each project stage. A central responsibility will be maintaining visibility over interfaces, design actions, approval dependencies, technical risks, and unresolved issues.

Effective coordination at this level will help reduce redesign, prevent conflicting technical requirements, protect project milestones, and improve the quality of information released to downstream delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage multidisciplinary design coordination across assigned infrastructure projects, packages, and asset scopes.
  • Support senior management and the Senior Design Manager with daily design delivery activities.
  • Coordinate consultant teams to maintain alignment between technical disciplines and project requirements.
  • Review consultant submissions before formal approval for quality, completeness, consistency, and coordination.
  • Verify design deliverables against approved briefs, standards, scope requirements, and project objectives.
  • Monitor design development through concept, intermediate, detailed, and relevant stage-gate milestones.
  • Track consultant performance against scheduled submission and review dates.
  • Maintain awareness of design activities that may affect procurement, construction, or project delivery.
  • Coordinate interfaces between engineering disciplines, infrastructure systems, assets, and delivery packages.
  • Identify technical gaps and cross-disciplinary conflicts before they affect later project stages.
  • Support resolution of design clashes between different consultant and discipline outputs.
  • Coordinate technical responses to design queries, clarification requests, and unresolved design comments.
  • Facilitate constructability discussions where proposed designs may create delivery constraints.
  • Engage relevant technical specialists when additional design assurance is required.
  • Maintain design trackers, registers, action logs, comment schedules, and approval records.
  • Ensure actions arising from technical reviews are assigned to responsible parties and tracked through closure.
  • Apply approved design management templates, processes, tools, and reporting practices.
  • Maintain reliable records of design decisions and significant technical agreements.
  • Monitor approval workflows to identify delayed reviews or outstanding responses.
  • Coordinate internal and external review cycles to support timely project decisions.
  • Track design submissions from initial issue through comments, revision, resubmission, and approval.
  • Identify risks associated with incomplete information, late design changes, unresolved interfaces, or consultant delays.
  • Maintain visibility over design assumptions, dependencies, and constraints.
  • Support mitigation planning for design-related risks affecting cost, schedule, quality, or constructability.
  • Escalate significant design concerns when resolution exceeds assigned authority.
  • Work with Planning and Project Controls teams to align design milestones with the broader delivery program.
  • Provide current design status information for progress reporting and management reviews.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders whose requirements influence infrastructure design packages.
  • Liaise with support functions to obtain timely technical input and approvals.
  • Ensure design consultants receive clear consolidated comments rather than conflicting instructions.
  • Coordinate meetings involving designers, project teams, stakeholders, and technical specialists.
  • Prepare and maintain design coordination actions arising from workshops and review sessions.
