The Consultant PICU Specialist will provide senior clinical management for children requiring continuous monitoring, organ support, mechanical ventilation, invasive procedures, and rapid intervention for life‑threatening illness or injury. The role requires confident decision‑making across respiratory failure, severe infection, neurological emergencies, postoperative deterioration, hemodynamic instability, and other complex pediatric presentations. Working closely with pediatric subspecialists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and intensive care nurses, the consultant will coordinate individualized treatment while maintaining high standards of safety and clinical governance.

• Assess and manage critically ill neonates, infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
• Provide advanced pediatric life support for patients with severe or rapidly deteriorating medical conditions.
• Lead stabilization of children presenting with respiratory failure, shock, severe infection, neurological emergencies, and other critical illnesses.
• Perform and supervise endotracheal intubation and advanced pediatric airway management.
• Insert and manage central venous access when invasive monitoring or treatment is required.
• Perform arterial line placement for continuous blood pressure monitoring and blood gas assessment.
• Initiate and manage invasive and non‑invasive mechanical ventilation according to patient physiology and clinical response.
• Adjust ventilator strategies based on oxygenation, ventilation, lung mechanics, blood gases, and disease progression.
• Manage pediatric sedation and analgesia for ventilated, critically ill, or procedurally complex patients.
• Monitor cardiovascular status and coordinate fluid, medication, and vasoactive treatment where required.
• Develop individualized critical care plans using current evidence‑based pediatric intensive care practices.
• Respond to pediatric emergencies, rapid response calls, and clinical deterioration throughout the hospital.
• Coordinate care with pediatric cardiology, neurology, surgery, anesthesiology, infectious disease, and other subspecialties.
• Support postoperative management of high‑risk pediatric patients requiring intensive monitoring or organ support.
• Review laboratory investigations, imaging findings, physiological trends, and bedside monitoring data to guide ongoing treatment.
• Communicate clearly with families regarding critical illness, treatment priorities, prognosis, procedures, and expected progression.
• Supervise residents, junior physicians, fellows, and PICU clinical staff during routine and emergency care.
• Maintain accurate progress notes, procedural records, treatment plans, and critical care documentation.
• Participate in clinical governance, morbidity reviews, audits, patient‑safety initiatives, and departmental quality improvement.
• Contribute to continuing medical education, bedside teaching, simulation training, and professional development activities.

The successful candidate will hold an MBBS, medical degree, or equivalent recognized qualification together with specialist training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Board Certification, CCT, Fellowship, European Board, American Board, or another equivalent recognized specialist credential is required. Applicants should bring at least 5 years of Consultant‑level PICU experience, preferably gained within a tertiary‑care or internationally accredited hospital. UK CCT, Irish, European, Australian, Canadian, or American Board credentials are particularly relevant to the preferred profile.
