Automation Engineer

Position Summary

The Automation Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, and maintaining control systems used in grain handling, storage, and processing facilities. This role ensures efficient, safe, and reliable operation of automated equipment such as conveyors, elevators, dryers, cleaners, and blending systems. The ideal candidate has strong PLC, SCADA, and electrical troubleshooting experience, along with an understanding of industrial processes in the grain industry.

• Design, develop, and implement automation and control systems for grain handling equipment and facilities.
• Develop PLC programs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and HMI/SCADA interfaces for process control and monitoring.
• Integrate sensors, drives, and field instruments into automated systems.

• Troubleshoot and resolve automation-related issues to minimize downtime.
• Maintain and update PLC, HMI, and network documentation.
• Provide technical support for plant operators and maintenance teams.

• Lead automation projects from concept through commissioning, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and process engineers during system upgrades and new installations.
• Manage contractors and vendors for automation equipment and software.

• Ensure all automation systems comply with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
• Participate in risk assessments and develop safe work procedures related to control systems.
• Analyze production data to identify areas for efficiency improvements.
• Implement control logic and data acquisition to optimize energy use, throughput, and equipment reliability.
• Support digital transformation initiatives, such as predictive maintenance and remote monitoring.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• 5 + years of experience in industrial automation, preferably in grain handling, food processing, or bulk materials industries.

• Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, etc.).
• Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (Factory Talk, Ignition, Wonderware, etc.).
• Knowledge of industrial networks (Ether Net/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
• Familiarity with instrumentation, VFDs, and motor control systems.
• Understanding of process control, safety systems, and instrumentation calibration.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple projects.

• Experience with grain elevators, conveyors, drying systems, and storage silos.
• Knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, and ATEX standards for dust and explosion safety.
• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN for control panel design.
• Understanding of data collection, historian systems, and Industry 4.0 principles
