Senior Lead Engineering Manager – Telecommunications Networks (Renewable Energy)

We are seeking an experienced Senior Lead Engineering Manager to provide technical leadership across telecommunications networks supporting utility-scale renewable energy and power transmission infrastructure.
This is a highly specialised role focused on the design, integration, commissioning, and optimisation of telecom networks that enable secure, reliable, and low-latency control, monitoring, metering, and data exchange across:
- Wind farms
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Power transmission systems and substations
You will play a pivotal role throughout the project lifecycle, from conceptual design and engineering through to commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational support.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the engineering and design of telecommunication systems for power transmission networks, substations, and renewable generation plants
- Develop telecom network architectures to support plant control, SCADA, protection systems, metering, and operational communications
- Specify and select key telecom equipment including fibre optic systems, multiplexers, Ethernet switches, GPS/GNSS systems, and time synchronisation equipment
- Perform telecom budget calculations and determine equipment ratings and specifications
- Collaborate closely with Protection & Control teams to ensure seamless system integration
- Define communication architectures supporting critical plant and grid infrastructure
- Work with industry-standard protocols including:
- IEC 61850
- IEC 60870-5-101 / 104
- Modbus TCP/IP
- GOOSE messaging
- Interface with systems including:
- SCADA
- RTU
- PPC
- EMS
- SAS
- Protection Relays
- PMU and SCMS
- Design low-latency and highly reliable telecom networks supporting fast control loops and operational stability
- Ensure compliance with cyber security standards and project-specific security requirements
- Implement resilient communication architectures with redundancy and failover capabilities
- Support time synchronisation solutions using IEEE 1588 (PTP), IEEE C37.238, IRIG-B, GPS and GNSS technologies
- Lead telecom Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and provide technical guidance during commissioning
- Support cold and hot commissioning activities across utility-scale projects
- Conduct and oversee:
- Network redundancy and failover testing
- PTP/NTP stability testing
- WAN connectivity verification
- Cyber security validation
- Communication protocol testing
- Diagnose network and system performance issues using industry-standard diagnostic and monitoring tools, including packet capture and network analysis software.
You are an experienced telecommunications or communications systems engineer with a strong background in power systems, substations, or renewable energy infrastructure.
You will ideally have:- 15+ years of experience in telecommunications or control systems within the power or energy sector
- 5+ years of technical leadership experience
- Deep expertise in telecom systems for substations, transmission networks, and renewable energy plants
- Strong understanding of fibre optic networks, multiplexers, Ethernet switching, and time synchronisation systems
- Experience with utility-scale solar, wind, BESS, or power transmission projects
- Familiarity with leading telecom OEM technologies and products
- Excellent troubleshooting and commissioning capabilities across complex communication networks.
- B.E. /
B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering or a related discipline - M.Tech in Communication Systems preferred
