Position: Senior Traffic Engineer / Senior Traffic and Detour Engineer

Job Description Overview

The Senior Traffic and Detour Engineer will serve as a senior technical specialist responsible for the planning, design, review, and implementation of traffic management and detour strategies for major road and infrastructure projects. The role ensures the safe and efficient movement of traffic during construction and operational phases while minimizing disruption to road users and maintaining network performance.

The role requires providing technical leadership in the development and evaluation of traffic management plans, detour schemes, and temporary traffic arrangements, ensuring alignment with project objectives, safety requirements, and applicable standards.

Responsibilities

Traffic Management and Detour Planning - Lead the development and review of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs), Detour Plans, and Temporary Traffic Control Plans for infrastructure and road projects. Design safe, efficient, and practical detour schemes to accommodate construction activities while maintaining traffic flow and minimizing congestion. Develop traffic staging and phasing plans aligned with construction sequencing and project delivery schedules. Ensure detour designs address safety, accessibility, emergency vehicle access, and operational continuity.

Traffic Engineering Analysis - Conduct traffic impact assessments, traffic capacity analysis, and operational assessments to evaluate detour effectiveness. Analyze traffic volumes, turning movements, intersection performance, and road network operations. Utilize traffic modeling and simulation tools to assess and optimize traffic detour and management strategies. Review contractor‑submitted traffic management and detour proposals and provide technical recommendations.

Project Implementation and Site Coordination - Provide technical oversight during implementation of traffic detours and temporary traffic management measures. Conduct site inspections to ensure traffic diversions are implemented in accordance with approved plans and safety standards. Identify traffic risks, operational conflicts, and safety concerns, and implement mitigation measures. Support construction teams to ensure traffic management measures align with project schedules.

Stakeholder Coordination and Approvals - Coordinate with clients, government authorities, traffic police, and contractors to obtain necessary approvals for detour and traffic management plans. Participate in technical coordination meetings and provide expert input on traffic‑related matters. Support multidisciplinary coordination with design, construction, and supervision teams.

Compliance and Quality Assurance - Ensure all traffic management and detour plans comply with national regulations, applicable standards, and project requirements. Ensure proper implementation of traffic safety measures including signage, markings, barriers, and traffic control devices. Conduct technical reviews and audits to ensure quality and compliance.

Documentation and Reporting - Prepare and review traffic management reports, detour drawings, technical specifications, and method statements. Maintain documentation of approved traffic management plans and detour implementations. Provide technical reports, progress updates, and recommendations to project leadership.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Master s degree in Transportation Engineering or Traffic Engineering is preferred.
  • Professional membership with a recognized engineering institution is preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in traffic engineering, traffic management, and detour planning.
  • Proven experience in major road, infrastructure, or urban development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing traffic management and detour plans for complex construction projects.
  • Experience coordinating with contractors, consultants, and government authorities.
  • Strong expertise in traffic engineering, traffic management, and detour design.
  • Experience in traffic impact assessments, traffic analysis, and traffic modeling.
  • Proficiency in traffic analysis software such as SYNCHRO, SIDRA, VISSIM, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and engineering design tools.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic control devices, road safety standards, and temporary traffic management.
  • Strong technical leadership and engineering judgment.
  • Excellent coordination and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage complex traffic challenges in large infrastructure environments.
  • Strong communication and technical reporting skills.
