Senior Hydraulic Modelling Engineer – Stormwater Drainage and Flood Protection

Job Type: Design Hydraulic Modelling / Flood Protection / Stormwater Design

Job Summary: The Senior Hydraulic Modelling Engineer will lead advanced hydrological and hydraulic modelling works for major stormwater drainage, flood protection, and urban flood resilience projects within Riyadh. The role supports municipal drainage upgrades, wadi flood mitigation, and infrastructure development aligned with the standards of RCRC, MOMRAH, NWC, and other Riyadh based authorities. The engineer is responsible for developing accurate 2D and integrated 1D/2D models, conducting scenario based flood analysis, and providing data driven engineering recommendations to multidisciplinary design teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Hydrological & Hydraulic Modelling

  • Develop and calibrate 2D and 1D/2D integrated hydraulic models using Info Works ICM and HEC‑RAS.
  • Model surface runoff, wadi flow behavior, culverts, tunnels, stormwater basins, and conveyance systems relevant to Riyadh’s terrain.
  • Assess flood risks, inundation extents, flow velocities, and identify critical hazard zones across Riyadh’s urban and suburban areas.
  • Conduct scenario analysis for extreme rainfall events typical to Riyadh’s climatic conditions.
  • Provide modelling outputs to support concept, preliminary, and detailed design stages for municipal and mega‑project infrastructure.

2. Flood Protection Design

  • Recommend flood mitigation solutions including diversion channels, retention/detention basins, berms, and flow‑control structures.
  • Support flood protection planning for wadis, new urban developments, and existing municipal areas within Riyadh.
  • Conduct flood risk assessments aligned with Saudi authority requirements and international best practices.

3. Stormwater Drainage Network Design

  • Design stormwater networks including pipes, manholes, traps, conveyance lines, and collection basins.
  • Calculate hydraulic capacities, flow velocities, energy losses, and pressure conditions.
  • Use ICM and SWMM models to evaluate network performance under varying storm conditions.
  • Coordinate with civil, infrastructure, and supervision teams to ensure integrated and compliant designs.

4. Data Analysis & Digital Terrain Development

  • Process rainfall, flow, elevation, LiDAR, DEM, and GIS datasets relevant to Riyadh’s topography.
  • Build accurate DTM/DEM surfaces and prepare terrain data for 2D flood modelling.
  • Manage spatial databases and ensure data quality, consistency, and traceability.

5. Technical Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed technical reports covering modelling methodology, assumptions, results, and engineering recommendations.
  • Present findings to clients, authorities, and internal teams with clarity and technical accuracy.
  • Maintain documentation for model versions, calibration records, and scenario outputs.
Qualifications & Experience Academic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related discipline.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in flood modelling and stormwater drainage network design, preferably within Saudi Arabia or GCC.
  • Info Works ICM (1D/2D)
  • ArcGIS / QGIS
  • Experience developing flood models for urban areas, wadis (valleys), and arid‑region hydrology.
  • Strong background in scenario analysis, flood risk assessment, and hydraulic system performance evaluation.
  • Familiarity with Riyadh municipal standards, RCRC drainage guidelines, and Saudi flood protection regulations is an advantage.
Core Competencies
  • Advanced hydraulic modelling and analytical skills.
  • Strong understanding of hydrology, stormwater systems, and flood behavior in arid climates.
  • Proficiency in GIS‑based spatial analysis and terrain processing.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
