Role ContextThe Senior Road Engineer provides technical leadership during the design development and review of roadway infrastructure. The position evaluates drawings, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates while coordinating closely with designers, clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities. By resolving technical issues early and applying established roadway design standards, the role helps reduce design risk, improve constructability, support permitting, and maintain high engineering quality throughout project development.
Key Responsibilities- Perform detailed technical reviews of roadway design plans and engineering drawings.
- Review roadway design calculations to verify technical accuracy, assumptions, and compliance with applicable criteria.
- Examine roadway specifications for consistency with project requirements and accepted engineering standards.
- Review construction cost estimates associated with roadway works and identify technical or scope-related discrepancies.
- Prepare, maintain, and monitor comment resolution sheets throughout the design review process.
- Track outstanding technical comments and ensure responses are properly addressed and closed.
- Meet with designers and client representatives to confirm project requirements and design criteria.
- Collaborate with design teams to improve roadway solutions and resolve engineering challenges.
- Provide clear technical guidance when design alternatives or modifications are being considered.
- Attend stakeholder meetings and explain roadway design concepts, constraints, and engineering considerations.
- Coordinate with regulatory authorities and support the technical aspects of permit and approval processes.
- Participate in value engineering workshops to identify practical improvements in cost, constructability, and performance.
- Review alternative roadway design solutions from technical and operational perspectives.
- Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions and verify that proposed designs are appropriate for the project environment.
- Identify site constraints that may affect roadway geometry, drainage interfaces, access, utilities, or construction methodology.
- Meet directly with designers to explain technical review comments and agree appropriate resolutions.
- Ensure technical comments are clear, justified, and based on applicable engineering criteria.
- Support multidisciplinary coordination where roadway design interfaces with structures, utilities, drainage, landscape, or other infrastructure systems.
- Maintain accurate technical records related to design reviews, comments, meetings, and agreed resolutions.
- Contribute engineering input during project coordination and design development meetings.
- Help ensure roadway designs remain consistent with approved project scope, standards, and client objectives.
- Perform additional technical responsibilities associated with roadway engineering and infrastructure design as required.
