The Rolling Stock Engineer will work within the rail systems team to safeguard the technical performance and acceptance of passenger trains operating under automatic operation. Reporting to the Lead Rolling Stock Engineer, the position will review supplier and Design Build contractor submissions, resolve technical issues, manage multidisciplinary interfaces, and verify that rolling stock systems satisfy client requirements and applicable railway standards.
The role covers the complete train architecture, including carbody, bogies, propulsion, braking, doors, HVAC, auxiliary power, couplers, gangways, wiring, interiors, and onboard control systems. Successful delivery will depend on close integration with signalling, platform screen doors, telecommunications, traction power, stations, depot facilities, and civil infrastructure.
- Support the Lead Rolling Stock Engineer with technical assurance and delivery of passenger rolling stock.
- Provide specialist advice to engineering, construction, project controls, systems integration, testing, and client teams.
- Review rolling stock system and subsystem designs submitted by the Design Build contractor.
- Verify compliance with contractual requirements, technical specifications, approved standards, and client performance criteria.
- Develop and review interface specifications supporting rolling stock supplier design and system integration.
- Coordinate rolling stock interfaces with signalling, platform screen doors, telecommunications, traction power, stations, depots, and civil infrastructure.
- Review vehicle configuration, train formation, passenger capacity, operating performance, and system compatibility.
- Evaluate rolling stock architecture for at-grade, elevated, and underground railway operations.
- Review design specifications for carbody structures, bogies, suspension systems, braking, propulsion, auxiliary power, and train control.
- Assess HVAC systems, passenger doors, gangways, couplers, wiring, interiors, panels, and associated train equipment.
- Review automatic train control and onboard interfaces associated with automatic railway operations.
- Monitor technical design development and identify issues that could affect safety, quality, schedule, cost, or system acceptance.
- Coordinate with Project Controls teams to track design deliverables, review schedules, and monitor supplier progress.
- Maintain visibility of technical milestones and advise project leadership of emerging rolling stock risks.
- Analyse RAMS performance against client specifications and railway safety requirements.
- Review reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety evidence associated with rolling stock systems.
- Assess rolling stock operation and maintenance requirements throughout the asset lifecycle.
- Review maintainability provisions, access requirements, replacement strategies, and maintenance interfaces.
- Support assessment of train performance, passenger loading, operating scenarios, and system capacity.
