Role ContextThe Rail Systems Engineering Manager will provide senior technical leadership across integrated railway systems while maintaining oversight of engineering quality, interfaces, requirements, and systems assurance. The position combines strategic technical decision-making with direct management of engineers and technicians, requiring the ability to resolve complex multidisciplinary challenges with minimal supervision. The manager will help ensure signalling, telecommunications, SCADA, AFC, PSD, and associated rail technologies operate as a coherent and assured system throughout project development and delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and coordinate a multidisciplinary group of engineers and technicians responsible for railway systems engineering activities.
- Interpret, organize, execute, and oversee technically complex assignments across major rail infrastructure programs.
- Establish engineering priorities, scopes, technical approaches, and investigation strategies for challenging or unconventional systems issues.
- Provide leadership across signalling, telecommunications, SCADA, Automatic Fare Collection, Platform Screen Doors, and integrated railway system architectures.
- Direct requirements management activities to maintain traceability between stakeholder needs, technical specifications, design outputs, verification, and final acceptance.
- Manage interfaces between railway subsystems, civil infrastructure, stations, operational systems, and external stakeholders.
- Oversee RAMS activities covering reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety throughout the systems engineering lifecycle.
- Guide systems assurance processes and confirm that engineering evidence supports project safety, performance, and compliance requirements.
- Apply EN50126, EN50128, and EN50129 principles to relevant engineering, assurance, and railway safety activities.
- Investigate complex technical problems and develop practical engineering concepts and solutions where established approaches are insufficient.
- Exercise independent professional judgment on significant technical matters within delegated authority.
- Maintain effective technical liaison with internal disciplines, project leadership, clients, consultants, contractors, and other external parties.
- Coordinate engineering deliverables across disciplines while identifying technical dependencies and resolving interface constraints.
- Review engineering outputs and support consistent technical quality across the team 's work.
- Develop engineering capability through technical direction, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and effective allocation of specialist resources.
- Provide clear technical recommendations and status information to project and program leadership.
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor 's degree in Engineering or an equivalent professional qualification and bring at least 18 years of progressive systems engineering experience within the rail industry. Substantial technical exposure to railway signalling, telecommunications, SCADA, AFC, PSD, and integrated rail architectures is essential. The role requires proven capability in Requirements Management, Interface Management, RAMS, and Systems Assurance, supported by experience on major rail infrastructure programs.
Candidates should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of EN50126, EN50128, and EN50129 and the ability to apply these standards within complex project environments.
