Responsibilities- Collects blood from patients in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes.
- Assembles equipment—tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol—on the work tray according to the requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verifies or records the identity of the patient or donor and converses with them to allay fear of the procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to the arm, locates an accessible vein, swabs the puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts the needle into the vein to draw blood into a collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws the needle, applies treatment to the puncture site, and labels and stores the blood container for subsequent processing.
- Performs bleeding times as ordered by physicians, taking care to limit the depth and length of the incision so as not to damage tissue unnecessarily.
- Transports specimens in a timely manner from the collection areas to the Clinical Laboratory.
- Handles minor patient or donor reactions in a calm and orderly fashion and reports to the supervisor or work director.
- Follows all safety and infection‑control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures and handling biological specimens.
- Maintains the work area in an orderly manner and cleans and disinfects regularly to avoid contamination.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactorily perform phlebotomy on patients of all age groups, including neonatal.
- Possesses working knowledge of quality‑control methods and a quality‑improvement program based on international standards, e.g., JCIA standard, ISO 9000 Laboratory standards.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Complies with the hospital dress code.
- Educates patients or families as per their needs and implements the patient/family education process, per policy NSP‑GEN‑014, documenting in the patient medical record.
- Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the scope of the employee’s knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from an approved school of medical technology, college, or university.
- Current registration with the designated authority for Medical Technologist/Technician from the country of origin or recruitment and license of the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Saudi Arabia.
- Certified Phlebotomist from the Saudi Council.
- Four (4) years of experience, including a phlebotomy training class or satisfactory on‑job training.
- Fluency in verbal and written English.
- Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Good manual dexterity essential for invasive procedures.
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy, especially the circulatory system.
- Working knowledge of computer skills.
- Knowledge of current proficiency in testing and quality control.
