Middle East Health and Safety Manager – Mott Mac Donald
Reporting to the Middle East Unit General Manager and Regional HSSW Manager, the role will manage the Unit and sub‑division health and safety team, with responsibility for leading, identifying and driving improvements in health and safety across the Unit business activities. The H&S Lead will be motivated, pro‑active, focused on adding value to the business through effective engagement with staff, management and clients.
The location of the role is flexible between Abu Dhabi or Riyadh.
Key responsibilities- Promoting a dynamic safety culture across the Unit, continuously looking for improvement
- Providing regular health and safety advice for staff and managers in the Unit, especially around contractual H&S scope in project activities.
- Promoting effective and timely communication of relevant HSSW information within the Unit
- Keeping abreast of developments in relevant HSSW legislation and practice, and acting upon any changes accordingly
- Presentation of monthly reporting to the Unit GM and Executive on HSSW performance, including transparent analysis of trends and issues arising from incident reports, audits and the dissemination of lessons learned as appropriate
- Carrying out the Annual Unit HSSW management review, to cover the remit of the function
- Strategizing, planning and monitoring Unit HSSW objectives in line with Regional and Group requirements
- Compiling Unit risk profile and recommending a schedule of targeted HSSW Audits
- Conducting internal audit of offices, project sites within the Unit and providing a report on remedial actions taken within BMS Systems, including review of contractual scope adherence.
- Reviewing and updating safety plans with the Unit General Manager at least once per year
- Conducting an annual review of relevant country / territory specific HSSW legislation registers
- Assisting with project WIN bids and DO implementation stages, including client relationship meetings
- Supporting portfolios in closing out audit non‑conformities and escalating issues where necessary
- Contributing to or undertaking internal incident or accident investigation when required
- Working with the Unit HR team, as required, to ensure employment policies and other HR issues incorporate required HSSW requirements
- Promoting and improving incident reporting and positive interventions across the Unit
- Co‑ordinating HSE reporting requirements with the Unit’s Business Management Systems Manager
- Undertaking safety‑related training and mentoring as required
- Ensuring any serious incidents are raised to relevant stakeholders within specified time limits
- Liaising with the enforcement authorities and other bodies as necessary
- Liaising with the Regional and Group Safety Manager as required
- Representing the Unit and Divisions on all HSSW matters (Group forums or meetings)
- Setting a personal example in line with MM PRIDE values
- Candidates should hold a NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent and Membership (or working towards) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or equivalent (CSP, IIRSM)
- Candidates should hold certification as Lead/Internal Auditor under ISO 45001
- Operational experience across the industry as a lead HSSW practitioner, ideally at consultancylevel, with experience in both design and construction fields, with a solid appreciation and understanding of health and safety legislation and its application across sectors
- Demonstrating an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft packages and proven experience of working with databases, reports and data analysis.
- Engaging, developing and maintaining effective working relationships with managers, employees and stakeholders, with excellent communication and presentation skills and effective planning and time‑management skills. A working knowledge of health and safety management reporting systems is also essential.
