Job DescriptionRole Overview:
The Carpentry Technician is a skilled woodworking professional responsible for the construction, assembly, and finishing of bespoke event structures, props, furniture, and set pieces. Working in a custom fabrication environment, this role demands a high degree of craftsmanship combined with the ability to work at pace to meet tight project deadlines. The technician will interpret technical drawings, work with diverse materials, and collaborate closely with other trades to deliver high-quality event builds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabrication & Construction:
Construct custom event structures, props, furniture, staging elements, and set pieces from wood, MDF, plywood, and composite materials to design specifications. - Technical Drawing Interpretation:
Read and accurately work from technical drawings, CAD plans, and design briefs to produce dimensionally accurate components and assemblies. - Joinery & Assembly:
Apply appropriate joinery techniques (mortise & tenon, dowelling, biscuit jointing, CNC routing) to produce strong, clean assemblies. - Material Selection:
Select appropriate timber grades, sheet materials, and hardware based on load requirements, aesthetic finish, and project budget. - Surface Preparation:
Prepare surfaces for painting, veneering, or laminating by sanding, filling, and priming to required finish standards. - CNC & Power Tools:
Operate CNC routers, table saws, panel saws, routers, and hand tools safely and accurately. - On-Site Installation:
Attend event sites to assemble, install, and derig fabricated structures within tight timelines. - Quality Control:
Self-inspect work at each stage to ensure dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and surface quality before handover to finishing trades. - Workshop Safety:
Maintain a safe, organised workspace; perform daily checks on tools and machinery; adhere to OSHA/workshop safety standards.
Required
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in carpentry/joinery, preferably within events, theatre, retail display, or custom furniture fabrication.
- Strong proficiency in workshop machinery: CNC router, table saw, panel saw, router table, and hand tools.
- Ability to accurately read and work from technical drawings and CAD files.
- Broad knowledge of timber, sheet materials (MDF, plywood, OSB), and hardware.
- Experience constructing large-scale structures and assembled builds for temporary installation.
- Surface preparation skills for paint-ready and veneer-ready finishes.
- Physical ability to lift and manoeuvre large timber and sheet materials.
- Awareness of load-bearing and structural requirements for event-safe builds.
- Environment:
Must be able to work in a workshop environment, which may include loud noise, dust, and heat, with some on-site installation work. - Hours:
May require working evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet event deadlines. - Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle tight deadlines and to work on site, which may include lifting, standing for long periods, and working in varied conditions.
