Role ContextThe Structural Steel Inspector will provide independent quality verification across fabrication yards and active construction areas, working closely with structural engineers, Quality teams, contractors, consultants, third-party inspectors, and fabrication specialists. The position is responsible for identifying non-conforming work before it progresses, maintaining material and welding traceability, confirming dimensional tolerances, and ensuring installed steelwork meets project acceptance criteria. Effective inspection at each stage will help prevent costly rework, protect structural integrity, and support smooth handover of completed works.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect structural steel fabrication, assembly, erection, and installation activities against approved drawings, project specifications, ITPs, and Method Statements.
- Review shop drawings, erection drawings, fabrication details, material specifications, and approved technical submissions before inspection activities.
- Carry out inspections at fabrication workshops, storage areas, pre-shipment locations, and construction sites as required.
- Verify structural steel materials against approved submittals and confirm correct grades, dimensions, thicknesses, heat numbers, and identification markings.
- Examine Material Test Certificates, Mill Certificates, Certificates of Conformity, and supporting material documentation for compliance and traceability.
- Monitor cutting, drilling, forming, fit-up, assembly, preparation, and fabrication processes for conformance with approved requirements.
- Inspect welding activities and confirm compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications and applicable project standards.
- Verify welder qualifications and ensure welding work is performed only by suitably approved personnel.
- Check joint preparation, alignment, fit-up, preheating requirements, welding parameters, and post-weld conditions.
- Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing activities including UT, MT, PT, RT, and visual testing where specified.
- Review NDT reports and verify that identified indications comply with applicable acceptance criteria.
- Inspect structural bolted connections for correct bolt type, grade, diameter, installation method, tightening, torque, and tension requirements.
- Confirm proper installation of high-strength bolts, washers, nuts, and associated connection components.
- Perform dimensional inspections of fabricated members, assemblies, and erected structural steel.
- Check alignment, plumbness, levels, elevations, connection geometry, tolerances, and final positioning against approved drawings.
- Verify anchor bolts, base plates, embedded items, grout interfaces, and steel-to-concrete connections before and after erection.
- Inspect surface preparation processes including cleaning, blasting, and substrate preparation prior to coating.
- Verify approved coating systems, environmental application conditions, Dry Film Thickness requirements, and coating inspection records.
- Inspect fireproofing and structural fire protection applications where included in the project scope.
- Monitor steel erection activities from a quality perspective and verify temporary stability provisions and approved erection sequences are maintained.
