OverviewThe City of Roanoke is seeking a Library Assistant I to perform clerical work in the public library system. The successful candidate will charge and discharge library materials, register patrons, assist in controlling status of materials in circulation, maintain files and records, use library facilities to assist the public, locate books, magazines and other materials as requested, and provide general library information.
The role also includes examining shelves, replacing incorrectly shelved books, inspecting and repairing library materials, and preparing materials for circulation.
- Charge and discharge library materials
- Register patrons
- Assist in controlling status of materials in circulation
- Maintain files and records
- Assist the public in the use of library facilities
- Locate books, magazines and other materials as requested
- Provide general library information
- Examine shelves and replace incorrectly shelved books
- Inspect and repair library materials
- Process and label materials for circulation
- Order and maintain inventory
- Prepare library materials for circulation, bindery and withdrawal from collections
- Assist staff with Youth and Adult programs
- Perform duties assigned, such as security monitoring
- May require evening and weekend hours of work
- No supervisory responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, a candidate must:
- Have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Possess one to three months of related experience and/or training in a clerical environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrate the ability to read, comprehend, and follow written and oral instructions
- Show effective oral and written communication skills
- Use common sense and reasoning ability in standardized situations
This is a non‑exempt position.

- Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently
- Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently
