Job Description
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) has initiated a nationwide search for an innovative and visionary leader to serve as its Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs provides strategic leadership and oversight of all faculty‑related matters ependently and in collaboration with other leaders, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs role includes engagement with and/or oversight of faculty appointments, faculty recruitment and retention, career development, including promotion and tenure processes, faculty‑related personnel matters, including annual performance evaluations, professional development programs, well‑being efforts, and governance issues and policies.
The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the VTCSOM and serves as a key advisor to the Dean. They will collaborate with department chairs, other decanal leaders, senior administrators, professional staff, and university and health system partners to advance VTCSOM’s mission. This role is central to fostering a vibrant and supportive academic environment that promotes faculty excellence in teaching, research, clinical care, and service.
VTCSOM has over 900 appointed faculty across ten clinical and two non‑clinical academic departments. Faculty are both employed by Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic, the college’s health system partner, and include clinicians, teaching and research faculty, affiliated health professionals, and community physicians. Faculty at VTCSOM hold full‑time faculty appointments with Virginia Tech and have a variety of ranks and tracks available to them.
The Office of Faculty Affairs supports faculty in achieving their academic goals and providing quality education to learners at the health center. VTCSOM welcomes approximately 50‑100 new faculty members each year, with continued expansion of the school expected to further increase this number.
Required Qualifications- Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
- Qualifications commensurate with the academic rank of Associate Professor or higher.
- Minimum of five years of experience as a faculty member in an academic health center.
- Leadership experience in academia or healthcare.
- Experience with conflict resolution and critical thinking skills, along with the ability to collaborate and problem‑solve within multiple constituencies and across differing levels of organizational complexity.
- Familiarity and experience with LCME accreditation standards for medical schools, particularly as they relate to faculty affairs and governance.
- Formal training in higher education, medical education, faculty administration, educational research, and/or educational science.
- A proven track record of progressive management experience and demonstrated success in providing strong leadership in medical education in a complex academic clinical setting, with experience in:
- Working directly with medical school leadership/administration
- Advising faculty in academic, clinical, professional identity formation, and career development
- Building and supervising effective teams in identifying and solving problems related to faculty affairs
- Leading and/or actively participating in professional organizations dedicated to faculty success
