Job Description: Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board. Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA.
The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses. Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for part-time Developmental Math Adjunct Faculty in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on a course-by-course, semester basis as needed. Developmental Math adjunct faculty are needed to teach developmental Math courses in-person during the day and/or evenings. Faculty are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and in trends in community college education. Applications will be received and considered on a continuous basis. Review of applications will occur when an adjunct faculty need arises and will continue until needed positions are filled.
- Teach developmental Math courses in-person during the day and/or evenings.
- Maintain currency in teaching disciplines and trends in community college education.
- Develop syllabi, exams, learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments for developmental math courses.
- Work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds; demonstrate excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the teaching assignment and either teaching/occupational experience related to the teaching assignment or graduate coursework in developmental education.
- All Adjunct Faculty positions require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments; as well as the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
- Master's degree in Mathematics.
- Teaching experience at the college level.
