Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Secondary Library Media Specialist for the 2026-27 school year. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia prior to August 2026.

Job Summary

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to plan and implement an effective library media center program that promotes learning for all students by providing equitable access to information, teaching information literacy skills, and encouraging lifelong learning. Libraries will support classroom lessons through the Standards of Learning, the 5C's, and the AASL National Library Standards.

Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks
  • Foster a respectful and welcoming atmosphere which encourages library media center usage as a center for learning, research, collaboration, and literacy.
  • Maintain a diverse, up-to-date library collection in accordance with district curriculum and patrons' needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of library media center reports such as expenditure reports, requisitions/purchase orders, circulation reports, technical work orders, etc.
  • Collaborate with teachers and the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher to integrate deeper learning, information literacy, the 5 c's, Problem Based Learning, STEM, etc. into library instruction.
  • Provide staff assistance in designing activities that help students learn to identify, analyze, and synthesize information by using a variety of materials & formats.
  • Participate in instructional planning by collaborating with classroom teachers to design, implement & evaluate resource-based and technology-rich teaching units.
  • Provide library programming to encourage the program to grow by offering additional activities outside of the scheduled lessons (i.e. book club, guest speakers, reading motivation programs, etc.).
  • Attend faculty meetings and other appropriate staff and department meetings.
  • Deliver information through a variety of creative activities and instructional practices that involve multiple learning styles.
  • Serve as an advocate for the library program and its services in the school and community.

  • General knowledge of and ability to use library automation software such as Destiny, as well as computer skills with Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.
  • Strong instructional technology skills such as the ability to operate audiovisual, standard office software, computer, and a willingness to learn unfamiliar technology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates.
  • Practices confidentiality at all times.
  • Demonstrates initiative and motivation and maintains an attitude of mutual respect and courtesy.

Education And Experience
  • Master's degree in a Library Media program or Bachelor's degree with 24 hours of library media coursework.
  • Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Library Media.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Possess good organizational skills.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
