Job Summary
Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes CAD software to develop basic designs and make preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals. Investigates and makes decisions regarding pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength‑weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements and cost.
Functions as the liaison between R&D, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, Configuration Management, and other key groups. Tasks include documenting Critical to Quality (CTQ) characteristics on purchased parts and assemblies, designing/revising tooling and fixturing, and assisting other engineers with new designs and revisions.
Responsibilities And Tasks
- Assist in analyzing customer requirements and translating them into mechanical approaches that meet these requirements, including human factors design principles.
- Generate a system mechanical layout with all components of a thoroughly detailed design using the Creo Parametric CAD system with minimal supervision.
- Perform component tolerance analyses to ensure fit and function.
- Participate in fabrication, inspection, and prototype part manufacturing with minimal supervision, working with other departments and SMEs to aid in supplier and manufacturer selection.
- Prepare for design reviews and present material for internal and external reviews.
- Participate in peer design reviews for complex mechanical designs.
- Perform initial hands‑on component assembly and debugging of prototype systems, and assist manufacturing engineers during initial production builds.
- Work with an SME to select proper materials, finishes, and fabrication processes to meet stringent performance, environmental, and other requirements.
Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field with equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of experience with product/tool design using CAD tools, preferably Creo Parametric; 3+ years for MS holder.
- Experience with parametric modeling best practices and Creo.
- Ability to perform structural analysis (FEA) using Ansys or Creo.
- Ability to perform thermal analysis using Ansys or Creo.
- Experience with DFM/A and DTUPC.
- Experience with complex tolerance analysis via Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME standards.
- Must be able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
- Basic MS Office skills:
Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. - 3D printer experience a plus.
- Experience in Windchill PLM a plus.
