Position OverviewOur Roanoke office is currently seeking a staff plumbing / fire protection designer. 10+ years of experience is preferred in the design of plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings. The applicant shall demonstrate proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit software (Revit preferred), Microsoft Office, and an understanding of national standard plumbing codes, building codes and NFPA codes in regard to plumbing and fire protection system design.
The designer will work directly with senior staff to develop plans and specifications for the construction of plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Meet with architects and other team members to determine appropriate plumbing and fire protection systems, locations, and preliminary cost estimates.
- Perform fieldwork to determine a design direction, including making educated decisions on system designs and upgrades. Experience with system layout, calculation, and sizing of piping and equipment.
- Work with architects, clients, and other engineering disciplines to coordinate systems during design and production drawings.
- Perform plumbing system and fire protection system design calculations.
- Prepare contract documents using the latest version of AutoCAD or Revit to design and provide concepts for schematic design packages.
Experience with Hydra Cad/ Hydra
CALC is a plus. - Develop technical construction specifications to support project design and drawings.
- Assist in plumbing and fire protection construction administration, including shop drawing review, site visits, cost proposal evaluations, and response to questions from the field.
- Ensure designs are compliant with relative plumbing and building codes and NFPA standards.
- Strong written and communication skills with the ability to multi‑task and work on simultaneous project assignments at different phases.
- Excellent client interface capabilities and organizational skills, ensuring delivery of quality service to the customer while maintaining the firm’s obligations.
- Enthusiasm and eagerness for continued education and development of new skills.
- Associate’s degree in a related engineering/science discipline with a sound knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals is desired; a graduate degree and/or registered Professional Engineer is a plus.
- ASPE CPDT, or CPD, is preferred or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
- LEED certifications are a plus.
