DescriptionAs a Paramedic you will administer life support care and transport to patients in pre-hospital settings as authorized and directed by a physician. You will perform a variety of skills related to acute and non-acute settings in ground and/or air transport, respond to medical emergencies in a 911 setting, protect life, and administer cardiac and trauma support when needed. You will also provide initial treatment at the emergency scene, assess patient response, and make adjustments as needed.
You will gather and analyze information, use reason when dealing with emotional topics, manage difficult customer situations, and maintain confidentiality.
- Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures, synthesize complex information, restore and stabilize heart rhythm on pulseless, non-breathing patients, initiate IV drugs to administer medication or replace fluids.
- Administer emergency procedures such as extrication of patient, intubation, defibrillation, and operate under ACLS protocol; administer injections of medications and drugs; initiate invasive and non-invasive treatment at an advanced level; treat life threatening arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, shock, and trauma; specialize in pediatric care.
- Observe, record, and report to physician or command center leader patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
- Maintain current treatment techniques, protocol changes and application of new drugs, materials and equipment; take responsibility for own actions and those of support team members.
- Prepare required reports and maintain records of activities; obtain patient information needed for insurance billings and understand covered and non-covered charges pertaining to ambulance services and insurance guidelines; coordinate activities with external entities if needed.
- Check daily units assigned, clean and stock supplies, and report any malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic; maintain supplies and use resources appropriately.
- Transport patients to hospital and non-hospital sites following safety guidelines.
Education:
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Experience:
No experience.
Licensure/Certification:
Certified in the state of Virginia as a Paramedic; AHA BLS – HCP, ACLS, PALS, Haz Mat Awareness, NRP, and PHTLS or BTLS required within one year of hire.
Other:
Maintain advanced transport medical knowledge and abilities; maintain an excellent driving record and be able to operate vehicle to emergency scene; provide current driving record and meet driver eligibility requirements for all driver positions; utilize excellent communication skills when dealing with staff, peers, patients, and family members in diverse situations; write clearly and present numerical data and patient reports effectively;
maintain knowledge of basic computer skills and applicable software.
