This NEW role serves to minister to individuals in crisis who seek shelter services. Representative of the spirit of Christ as an encourager while helping our guests move on to productive and independent living.
Hours of AvailabilityFull‑Time/Hourly
Typical schedule:
7:30 am – 4:30 pm;
Tuesday – Saturday; holidays as scheduled.

- Demonstrate attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple daily assignments and special projects.

- Patient and compassionate presence.
- Experience working with individuals living with mental health and substance use disorder (helpful).
- Previous experience with conflict resolution techniques (helpful).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Gmail, basic grammar.
- Willingness to work holidays as needed.
- Shelters Reset Coordination
- Coordinate with Maintenance and Housekeeping to prepare shelters for daily operation. Follow up on upkeep work orders.
- Daily inspection of shelters – ready to serve.
- Inventory management.
- Organize donations.
- Coordinate replenishment of shelters with supplies.
- Coordinate shelter closure with 3rd shift team members.
- Enforce shelter policies/processes for safety, security, and health of guests, team members, volunteers, and community.
- Work with individual and group volunteers to train and assist.
- Shelter Services – point of contact.
- Assist Rescue Mission departments in need of shelter assistance.
- Case management support for guests.
- Partner with Shelter CHW and Volunteer Coordinator.
- MO2S & Employed Guests Coordinator.
- Recruit and manage MO2S volunteers, including assignments and supervisor support.
- Monitor extended stay accommodation for employed guests with special circumstances.
- Administrative responsibilities: complete records/documents, inspections, incident reports, medication distribution, phone calls, supply maintenance.
- Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Be aware of safety/security concerns and report to the appropriate person(s). Weekly inspections of facility and report to appropriate people.
- Assist with conflict resolution/de‑escalation among clients, team members, and volunteers according to established procedures.
- Volunteer Engagement: strategy that builds the capacity of Rescue Mission through employee and volunteer partnership, creating positive outcomes for the organization and the volunteer.
- All Rescue Mission of Roanoke team members may be asked to complete other duties as assigned by leadership/management. Expectation is to complete these assignments as requested.
- Prolonged communication with others to exchange information.
- Frequent movement around to accomplish tasks.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing.
- Occasional stooping, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling.
- Consistent computer use and screen exposure.
- Lift up to 30 pounds; not repetitive.
- Temperatures may vary depending on activity/events; indoor/outdoor exposure.
- Noisy environments may vary depending on activity/event and/or location.
