At Good Samaritan Hospice, we consider it a sacred honor to walk alongside individuals and families during the end-of-life journey. We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, and adaptable Registered Nurse – PRN to provide expert clinical care, support our nursing teams, and step in when patients and families need us most.

This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse who values flexibility and meaningful patient care and enjoys the variety that comes with supporting different teams and patient needs. Our PRN nurses play an important role in ensuring patients receive consistent, compassionate care — whether providing scheduled visits, responding to emergent needs, completing admissions, or supporting our inpatient and home care teams.

Why You Will Love Working at Good Sam
  • Your work has deep meaning. You will provide care that promotes comfort, dignity, and quality of life while supporting patients and families through some of life’s most profound moments.
  • You make a difference across our teams. PRN nurses provide valuable coverage for staffing needs, emergent patient situations, admissions, and other clinical needs.
  • You will experience variety in your work. This role may support both home care and inpatient services, giving you the opportunity to work with different patients, teams, and clinical situations.
  • You are part of a mission-driven team. Work alongside a compassionate Interdisciplinary Team that believes every moment of the journey matters.
  • You are recognized and valued. Your flexibility, clinical judgment, and willingness to step in when needed are essential to providing reliable, high-quality care to our patients and families.
What You Will Do as a PRN Hospice RN:
  • Participate as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to provide holistic, patient- and family-centered care
  • Provide nursing visits on a scheduled or emergent basis based on patient and staffing needs
  • Complete comprehensive nursing assessments, including assessment of pain, bowel and bladder function, level of consciousness, nutrition and fluid balance, skin integrity, and other changes in condition
  • Complete accurate and timely admission assessments within required time frames
  • Develop collaborative plans of care with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team and provide nursing input into ongoing care planning
  • Participate in IDT care conferences as needed and communicate patient needs and recommendations to appropriate team members
  • Provide patient and family education to promote independence, support dignity at end of life, and help caregivers confidently provide care
  • Obtain physician orders when necessary and document verbal orders according to Good Samaritan policy
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record
  • Respond to families at the time of a patient's death, pronounce death according to procedure, notify appropriate agencies, and provide immediate bereavement support
  • Provide coverage for staff nursing needs, emergent patient needs, and admissions
  • Float between home care and inpatient services as needed to support organizational staffing needs
What We Are Looking For
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing education program
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience
  • For home care assignments: experience must include hospice or home health
  • For inpatient assignments: experience must include acute care, home health, hospice, medical-surgical, or geriatric nursing
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of automobile insurance

Schedule: PRN; must be available to work at least one shift per two-week pay cycle. Schedule and assignments will vary based on patient and staffing needs.

Compensation: $45/hour
