The City of Roanoke is seeking a Tree Trimmer to perform skilled work in the care and pruning of trees. The successful candidate will climb trees using rope and saddle, tree spikes, and ladders; perform tree pruning in accordance with ISA standards for public safety, environmental enhancement, and aesthetics; remove trees by felling using directional control or by topping and piecing down;

plant and transplant trees; apply pesticides for insect or disease control and to control unwanted vegetation; and apply fertilizer to shade and ornamental trees.

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Three years’ recent experience working as a trimmer and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

• Climb trees using rope and saddle, tree spikes, and ladders.
• Perform tree pruning per ISA standards for safety, environmental, and aesthetic goals.
• Remove trees by felling using directional control or by topping and piecing down.
• Plant and transplant trees.
• Apply pesticides and fertilizers as required.
• Perform cabling, bracing, bark tracing, and other tree surgery procedures.
• Operate an aerial lift device, backhoe/tractor, brush chipper, stump grinder/cutter, and telescopic crane truck.
• Perform snow removal as needed.
• May serve as lead worker in absence of supervisor.
