Job Title: Field Service Technician
Division/Department: Service
Reports to: Service Manager
Employees in this position service, repair, and maintain heavy equipment. The role requires applying a body of knowledge and certifications in heavy equipment maintenance.
Responsibilities- Repairs equipment in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner, whether in the field or in the shop.
- Troubleshoot electrical, engine, transmission, brakes, steering, frame, cab, and hydraulic systems; read diagrams, service manuals, and bulletins. May use troubleshooting tools such as VCAD on the Volvo Dealer Network.
- Inform customers of problems and costs to repair; order parts and coordinate with the parts department on backorders.
- Welding on equipment as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments (fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, clutches); change filters and oil.
- Submit paperwork timely (daily notes, timecards, tech-line reports, expense reports, warranty parts).
- Maintain service truck with daily inspection reports and use of ELD.
- Pursue ongoing knowledge through meetings, seminars, and training opportunities.
- Knowledge at the intermediate level; considerable knowledge at the experienced level; thorough knowledge at the advanced level.
- Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.
- Skills in using hand tools, mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
- Skills in diagnostic testing and tuning equipment; ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
- Ability to read manuals and schematics; ability to rebuild engines and major driveline components.
- Ability to communicate with other mechanics about repair work; ability to enter information in repair management software.
- Lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and pulling; climbing, balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; finger dexterity.
- Ability to lift 70 lbs.
- Ability to operate a forklift safely.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment WorkSTEPS physical and a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
- Exposed to moving mechanical parts; moderate noise levels.
- Must possess a clean MVR and valid Driver's License; ability to obtain DOT Medical Certification.
- Work outdoors in various climates/temperatures; may sit for extended periods.
- Must have a clean MVR.
- Must pass a drug screen, Functional Capacity Test, and DOT physical.
- Satisfactory background check prior to accepting the position.
- High School diploma;
Trade School (2-year degree) preferred. - Continuing education with verifiable credits from Manufacturer's technical schools or training programs.
