Maintenance Technician - Streets

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to serve on the Streets team of the Transportation division. The position performs skilled work on or around heavy motorized equipment involved in roadway maintenance and repairs, including asphalt distributor, dump truck, backhoe, heavy front‑end loader, large motor grader, and various hand tools. Responsibilities also include repairs to alleys, road shoulders, medians, curbs, sidewalks, and minor equipment adjustments.

The technician may work independently or supervise a street maintenance crew when the supervisor is absent.

Operates heavy and light equipment for snow removal and assists with emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre‑trip sheets.

Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of employment.

Ability to obtain a Tanker Endorsement (N) may be required within 12 months of employment.

Completion of other tasks supporting the division may be assigned.

Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.

• Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front‑end loader, and other medium to heavy equipment.
• Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
• Operates cranes and large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street and construction repairs.
• Performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed‑circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.
• Gathers and reports work site information from inspections.
• Applies pesticide and performs asphalt leveling.
• Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
• Operates all equipment, both light and heavy, in snow removal.
• Paints walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing.
• Performs minor repairs of buildings, doors, windows, floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items.
• Uses and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fields.
• Performs general laboring tasks such as collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties.
• Assists with event support, snow removal, and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends as needed.
• May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings, and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
• Might require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
• May supervise a crew in the absence of a supervisor.
• May be required to wear respiratory protection in the performance of duties.

• Performs preventive maintenance on signal‑related equipment, as well as cleaning, adjusting, and testing equipment.
• Installs and repairs traffic signals, controllers, Opticom and signal video detections, school zone flashers, and all of the City‑owned street lights and other electrical and electronic equipment.
• Assists with the installation of messenger cable, hanging overhead lights and other devices.
