Maintenance Technician III – Fleet Division

The City of Roanoke is seeking an experienced, self‑motivated Maintenance Technician III to join the Fleet Division of General Services on the day shift. This position performs skilled mechanical work on specialized construction and automotive equipment. Responsibilities include diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and servicing a wide range of medium and heavy automotive equipment, as well as specialized units such as diesel and gasoline engines, air compressors, pump apparatus, and aerial truck hydraulic systems.

The role also involves overhauling, fabricating, and servicing assemblies and components including single and two‑speed rear axles, multi‑speed transmissions, and hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum, and electric control systems.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required, along with one to three years of related experience or training in repairing automotive and light or heavy power‑driven equipment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

• Position requires qualification for State Inspector certification. Two ASE certifications must be obtained within the first year of employment. A State Inspection license and a Class B CDL are preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance, construction, and utilities activities.
  • Performs skilled work in the operation or repair of several types of motorized equipment and maintenance of facilities and/or equipment.
  • Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.
  • Makes and adjusts work assignments.
  • Requisition s necessary equipment and materials.
  • Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists.
  • Operates tractor‑trailers, street sweeper, bulldozers, heavy front‑end loaders, crane and chipper, excavator, large motor grader for leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repair.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal.
  • Inspects new and existing stormwater infrastructure using an onboard computer system to remotely operate a camera and tractor system and overlay information on screen, to be recorded on a laptop for later printing and importing into an asset management database.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy automotive and specialized equipment including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus and aerial truck hydraulic systems.
  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
  • Requisition s parts and materials used in the repair of motor equipment.
  • Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e., water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares, etc).
  • Performs journey‑level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding.
  • Performs carpentry work, building cabinets, benches, barricades, and other items.
  • Trains and instructs subordinates.
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to assure compliance with applicable law.
  • Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices, follows safety rules/procedures and avoids known hazards in the work environment, reviews safety procedures before beginning each job, and places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise a small work crew. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
