Position: Maintenance Technician I - Landscape

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to perform work on a Turf and Landscape Crew. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of turf maintenance activities throughout the City Rights‑of‑Way (ROW) and be responsible for adhering to an established mowing cycle. They must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of equipment including Ventrac, zero‑turn and walk‑behind mowers, string trimmers, edgers and leaf blowers;

perform semi‑skilled landscape maintenance including minor tree pruning, aerating, over seeding, mulching, turf renovations and other landscape maintenance duties as needed. They will operate heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assist with emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment. May be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements depending on departmental requirements. May require Pesticide Registered Technician Certification.
