OVERVIEWMarathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Process Controls Engineer II/III. The Process Controls Engineer will report to the Process Control Manager and will design, implement, and maintain process control strategies to optimize unit performance and reliability. Relocation is approved for this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Designs, implements, and maintains process control strategies to optimize unit performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoots and works with a team of specialists to resolve control system issues, including hardware, software, and network components.
- Collaborates with operations, engineering and maintenance teams to resolve operational challenges.
- Begins developing relationships with console operators.
- Supports Management of Change (MOC) processes for control system modifications.
- Participates in incident investigations and root cause analyses.
- Maintains documentation such as technical controller narratives, cause-and-effect diagrams, alarm database information, and workflow guidelines.
- Assists in planning and executing turnarounds, including scope development and post-event evaluations.
- Collaborates with project teams to define controller design philosophy, determine physical scope modifications needed to achieve controller objectives, and ensure integration with existing infrastructure.
- Develops a basic understanding to assist/support APC applications to enhance economic performance.
- Gains a deep understanding of the controller algorithms and the mathematics driving feedback control to implement the best configuration to meet plant objectives.
- Gains a deep understanding of the graphics code (VBScript and HTML) and uses that knowledge to troubleshoot, modify, and create the visual interface the board operator will use to interact with the controllers.
- Minimum (Required)
Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, electrical, or computer science required.
- Two (2) years or more of experience in process control engineering within refining, petrochemical, or related industries required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full‑time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with developing/modifying controllers in C300s, HPMs, and Triconex equipment.
- Experience with developing/modifying graphics in Honeywell Experion.
- Experience with writing code in Honeywell CAB, Honeywell CL, Honeywell AMCL, VBScript, Microsoft VBA, HTML, Java, Power Shell, etc.
- Experience with developing/modifying advanced Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
- Experience with determining economic justification on processing facilities.
- Experience with troubleshooting process unit issues within small teams.
- Experience with utilizing LLM chatbots for troubleshooting or developing code.

Schedule Requirements:
This position works a 9/80 schedule (9 hours a day Mon‑Thu, 8-hour Fridays, off every other Friday) with potential night or weekend support during upset or emergency conditions. Periodic refinery turnaround support and the associated schedule is required.
