Learning Support Assistant - Primary & Secondary PRU

Location: Rochdale
Pay: 110- 120 per day (depending on experience)
Job Type: Temporary to Long-Term
Start Date: September 2026

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people who need additional help to succeed in education? Do you have experience working with pupils with challenging behaviour, or transferable skills from youth work, care, mentoring, or support roles?

We are looking for a dedicated and resilient Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Rochdale area. This rewarding role involves supporting both primary and secondary-aged pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional support to engage positively with learning.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support primary and secondary-aged pupils with challenging behaviour.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that encourage engagement and confidence.
  • Assist teachers in delivering tailored learning activities to meet individual needs.
  • Promote positive behaviour using consistent behaviour management strategies.
  • Support pupils with their social, emotional, and personal development.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
Requirements

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour.
  • Have transferable skills from roles such as youth work, mentoring, residential care, support work, sports coaching, or similar.
  • Are patient, resilient, and able to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • Can build positive relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
  • Have excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Hold an Enhanced Child and Adult DBS registered on the Update Service, or be willing to apply for a new DBS.
Desirable Skills
  • Previous experience working in a PRU, Alternative Provision, or specialist education setting.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management, de-escalation techniques, and restorative approaches.
  • Team Teach or similar positive behaviour management training (desirable but not essential).
  • A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
