Secondary SEN Learning Support Assistant - Rochdale

The Role

As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, you’ll work closely with students aged 11–16 who require additional support to engage with education and develop positive relationships.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small group support throughout the school day.
  • Supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and associated behavioural challenges.
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with students to encourage engagement and progress.
  • Assisting teachers in delivering personalised learning activities.
  • Using positive behaviour management strategies to support emotional regulation.
  • Promoting pupils’ confidence, independence, and resilience.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to support individual education plans.
About You
  • Has experience working with children or young people, ideally within education, youth work, sports coaching, residential care, or support work.
  • Is calm, patient, resilient, and confident managing challenging behaviour.
  • Can build strong, professional relationships with pupils who require consistency and encouragement.
  • Has excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Is passionate about improving outcomes for young people with additional needs.
  • Holds an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or is willing to obtain one.
  • Has the right to work in the UK.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, ADHD, Autism (ASC), or behavioural needs is desirable but not essential.
