We're seeking an empathetic, forward thinking leader to guide our skilled Counsellors and Spiritual and Pastoral Care coordinator in delivering exceptional emotional and psychological support to people facing a life limiting illness and those close to them.

In this senior role, you'll help shape a vital service, champion person centred care, and provide strong, values driven leadership across our psychological care team. Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, you will ensure our support remains responsive, inclusive, and grounded in best practice.

We're looking for a BACP Accredited (or working towards) counsellor with experience in palliative and bereavement care, confident in managing a complex caseload while leading and developing the service.

Main duties of the job

The Psychological Care Manager will deliver and support the team to provide consistently high quality, person centred psychological, emotional and spiritual support that meets individual needs, promotes the hospice commitments with people with life-limiting conditions, and their families/loved ones, during the duration of their illness and after the death of the patient, retain clear professional identity and awareness of their professional skills and expertise, to best serve the interests of the patient/client/loved one, lead our outstanding Psychological Care Team, to drive change within the service to meet the needs of our community.

About us

This role is based at Springhill Hospice.

Springhill Hospice provides the following specialist palliative care services to adult patients with life-shortening illnesses:

  • 16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.
  • Hospice at Home Service for people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.
  • A Wellbeing Support Service operating Monday to Thursday, with sessions both within the Hospice and in community settings, offering different programmes for wellbeing, symptom self-management and advance care planning.
  • A Community Service providing specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes, including a Night Sitting service.
  • 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.
  • Bereavement Support for people who are experiencing difficulty in their grieving process following the loss of a loved one.
  • Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives who are experiencing psychological and emotional distress in their lives as a result of their own life shortening illness or the illness of someone significant to them.
  • Education and Training Centre providing specialist courses in palliative care and a range of other training programmes for Hospice staff and local health and social care professionals.
Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities

  • Clinical
    • Provide individual counselling and group therapies across Hospice services within own competencies and the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
    • Effective patient and client referral management to deliver timely, safe and therapeutic counselling in line with service specification.
    • Facilitate and oversee the triage of referrals to ensure appropriate risk mitigation, undertaking thorough risk assessments for each client and seeking guidance, support, or onward referral to alternative professionals when required.
    • Effective counselling caseload management to fulfil service demands and leadership responsibilities.
    • Maintain accurate and relevant written/computerised records as required by Springhill Hospice and in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018.
    • Maintain consistent communication with the clinical multi-disciplinary team to ensure optimum, holistic care and support is provided for patients and loved ones within the Hospice services.
