A Part-Time Park Attendant will oversee the daily functions of various Royal Oak parks and serve as the point of contact for renters and park facility users. Part‑time Park Attendant typical shift hours will include weekday afternoons and evenings and weekends. Shifts may be required on holidays. Applicants should expect to work 20 - 30 hours per week during the months of April through the end of October.
This position reports to the Recreation Coordinator, Park Ranger, or another proxy in the Parks & Recreation Department.
Part‑time Park Attendant hours will cover 2 PM - 11 PM during the week and 8 AM - 10 PM on weekends. May be scheduled in 4 - 8 hour shifts.
Essential Job FunctionsA Part – Time Park Attendant may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)
Park and Facility Management- Open and close park facilities and gates as directed.
- Review daily schedules and plan tasks to optimize time and resources.
- Programming and facility rental set‑ups and take‑downs.
- Greet and communicate with renters and park users, providing information and answering questions.
- Oversee and assist with park operations, ensuring smooth daily activities
- Monitor park sites, mediate park usage conflicts, and aid park patrons
- Perform facility maintenance, including cleaning and restocking restrooms, disposing of trash, and wiping down park furniture (tables, bleachers, picnic tables).
- Execute athletic field maintenance (e.g., dragging fields, setting bases, lining ball fields, and securing/removing equipment).
- Conduct daily tests and performance checks on splash pads, including water chemical tests and backwashing pumps.
- Patrol park premises to ensure safety and order.
- Monitor and report daily activities and any irregularities, such as damage, theft, or unusual occurrences.
- Safely operate park equipment, including golf carts, Gators, field dragging equipment, and other necessary tools.
- Demonstrate and uphold the City of Royal Oak’s customer service standards.
- Enforce park safety and operational policies.
- Adhere to all written and oral directives, ensuring compliance with safety, personnel, and administrative policies.
- Work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- May occasionally assist with in‑office tasks such as customer service, assist with recreation program organization, reading and printing park usage reports, or project research.
- Enforce safety and risk management strategies in support of and compliance with department policies, procedures, and ordinances.
- Familiarity with and effective implementation of the employee safety manual
- Demonstrate safe work habits including the usage of Personal Protective Equipment
- Promptly report hazardous conditions, accidents, property damage or patron injuries to supervisor; immediately address hazardous conditions as directed.
- Promptly submit completed incident/accident report forms to the supervisor
- Contact police or fire departments in the event of an emergency; assist with emergency procedures.
- Render First Aid, CPR, or other emergency assistance as necessary.
- Be prepared to assist in emergency situation.
- High School graduate or equivalent; must be 18 years or older.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with the public.
- Basic understanding of park operations, maintenance, and safety protocols.
- Ability to use and maintain equipment safely.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
