Cardiothoracic Transplantation And Mechanical Circulatory Surgery Fellowship

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, offers an advanced one-year fellowship in cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support for individuals who have recently completed either the American Board of Thoracic Surgery requirements or their equivalence in cardiothoracic surgery training abroad. International medical graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate.

The fellowship develops proficiency in surgical procurement, implantation and medical management of mechanical circulatory devices and heart and lung transplants.

In this fellowship, you are involved in patient selection, preoperative optimization of patients, implantation of devices, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, postoperative care and management of patients. Additionally, you participate in the evaluation of donor hearts/lungs and organ procurement. You will learn procurement from brain death donors and donation after circulatory death for both heart and lung including ex vivo and normothermic regional perfusion techniques.

The fellow is expected to quickly complete the UNOS requirements for certification as a primary surgeon in heart and lung transplantation.

You will also be part of our cardiothoracic transplant research group with the opportunity to present at national conferences and publications. Other educational and training programs for mechanical circulatory support and cardiothoracic transplantation are offered in the form of conferences and grand rounds.
