Responsibilities

Mayo Clinic Children's Section of Pediatric Palliative Care is recruiting a full-time physician to join our team in shaping the future of pediatric palliative care. The Section of Pediatric Palliative Care provides inpatient, outpatient, and perinatal palliative care as part of the interdisciplinary ComPASS Care Team. Physicians on the ComPASS Care Team deliver pediatric palliative care services alongside an interdisciplinary group that includes four physicians, one nurse practitioner, two nurses, two social workers, and one chaplain.

Care focuses on pain and symptom management, goals-of-care consultations, and psychosocial support for patients across the Neonatal, Pediatric, and Cardiovascular ICUs, as well as general hospital services. This includes standardized support for pediatric heart and bone marrow transplantation, patients on chronic invasive ventilation and ECMO, and intensive palliative oncology care prioritizing pain and symptom management. The ComPASS inpatient service offers 24/7 call coverage to support inpatient multispecialty units, outpatient pain and symptom management, and hospice care.

The Section of Pediatric Palliative Care embodies Mayo Clinic's three shields:

  • Patient care - ComPASS performs approximately 200 new consults annually with an average daily inpatient census of 11 patients per day. Outpatient Clinic provides daily clinic consultation for all multispecialty Mayo Clinic Children's patients and is integrated with Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
  • Research - ComPASS providers are active contributors to scholarly conferences and peer-reviewed publications in the field of pediatric hospice and palliative medicine.
  • Education - ComPASS physicians are integrated as core faculty in the pediatric residency and hospice and palliative medicine fellowship, including a former residency associate program director. Two physicians have won the Mayo Clinic Pediatric Teacher of the Year. Mayo Clinic's Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship supports three full-time physician fellows, including those on a pediatric track. In addition, ComPASS faculty serve as core faculty in the annual continuing education course, "Mayo Clinic Updates in Palliative Care" with a full-day dedicated to Pediatric Palliative Care.

Mayo Clinic Children's Pediatric Palliative Care physicians serve as national leaders with two former AAHPM Pediatric Chairs and one AAP Section on Hospice and Palliative Medicine Executive Committee member. We would be honored to have you join our team!
