The Registered Nurse in Radiation Oncology provides care for patients receiving or having received photon or proton radiation therapy. The RN is accountable for direct patient care, including patient education, symptom assessment and management, conscious sedation, and IV contrast administration. The RN collaborates daily with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and radiation therapists and assists in care coordination and research associated with clinical care.
The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care to meet patient and family needs. Within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. The RN possesses excellent communication skills, is skilled in mentoring and teaching, and may participate in committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as part of the role.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of Visa Screen or equivalent certification.
QualificationsStudent or graduate of an accredited associate or diploma nursing program, or in the candidacy process, as recognized by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA. If the program is not accredited by these bodies, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required.
Entry‑level associate degree registered nurses with an RN start date of April 1 2020 or later must provide documented evidence of completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
Entry‑level associate degree registered nurses with an RN start date prior to April 1 2020 must provide documented evidence of completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at the time of hire.
Additional Qualifications: Pediatric or Hematology/Oncology Nursing experience within the last 5 years preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required; prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to unpredictable situations. Demonstrated leadership, effective communication, and excellent critical‑thinking skills. The RN hired to this role may need to obtain ACLS and complete ECG training during orientation.
