Research Scientist, Medical Science
The Knauf Laboratory, led by Dr. Felix Knauf, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension at Mayo Clinic
, is dedicated to understanding the molecular mechanisms of kidney disease and translating these discoveries into precision therapies. The group's research focuses on oxalate and sulfate homeostasis and how genetic variation in their transporters influences cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. By integrating mouse genetics, organoid systems, human iPSC-derived models, and large biobank cohorts, the laboratory bridges fundamental discovery, translational research, and clinical investigation.
Its overarching goal is to uncover disease mechanisms that can be translated into personalized therapies for patients. The laboratory is also committed to training the next generation of physician-scientists and biomedical researchers. Dr. Knauf has supervised more than 30 research trainees and serves as Co-Director of the M.D.
-Ph.D. Program “Re-Thinking Health.” Dr. Knauf previously held faculty positions at Yale University and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He recently joined Mayo Clinic, where his research continues in close collaboration with teams at these esteemed institutions. The current position is being funded through a recently received RO1-funding from the National Institute of Health.
