Statement of Duties
Performs professional librarian tasks for a Library department. Specific duties and responsibilities vary depending on department. Performs other duties as required.
SupervisionIncumbent works under the general supervision of the Patron Services Supervisor or Technical Services Librarian. Is familiar with work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently and without specific instructions. Works with their supervisor to set annual goals for the department. Supervisor provides instructions for new or unusual responsibilities.
In field of specialty, incumbent is required to work independently in the analysis and evaluation as well as the development of new and/or revised programs and services. Incumbent must observe and follow library policies and procedures.
Incumbent provides instructions and guidance to Library Assistants.
Job EnvironmentWork at this level consists of varied work assignments, some of which involve non-standardized tasks, procedures and techniques, requiring evaluation and analysis on the part of the incumbent. The incumbent makes most decisions in day-to-day work. Problem solving with patrons may require considerable effort on occasion.
Errors could result in delays or loss of service and monetary loss.
The incumbent has frequent contacts with the public. Other contacts are with state and regional library associations, other city employees, historical societies, vendors, other government agencies, universities, schools and teachers. Primary forms of contact are: in‑person, by phone, in writing, and email.
Incumbent does not have access to confidential information.

As Customer Service Lead Librarian- Oversees daily operations of Main Floor point of service desk.
- Responsible for all Circulation functions including billing for overdue and lost books; issuing library cards, providing readers advisory service, producing statistics and reports and insuring the confidentiality of information.
- Provides information and assistance to library patrons.
- Receives complaints or special requests from library users and makes every effort to follow through in response to them; maintains quality public relations, advising patrons of library programs, procedures and policies.
- Prepares and sets up exhibits, creates bibliographies, and develops other means to encourage borrowing of Library materials.
- Participates in the selection of new Library Materials and other aspects of collection maintenance.
- Processes new items received from technical services and moving items into collection.
- Provides input to Patron’s Services Supervisor in preparation of evaluations of Library Assistants.
- May make presentations to community groups explaining library programs and services.
- May attend professional library conferences, seminars and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.
- Works primarily at the Second Floor point of service desk.
- Provides friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful library services to our patrons while working the public desks. This could include reference questions, reader’s advisory, circulation of materials, and more.
- Initiates, plans, oversees, publicizes and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library. Programs may include films concerts, book groups, speakers’ performers and other special events.
- Makes presentations to community groups explaining library programs and services.
- Works collaboratively with other members of the Library staff to generate program ideas and coordinate development.
- Receives complaints or special requests from library users and makes every effort to follow through in response to them; maintains quality public relations, advising patrons of library programs, procedures and policies.
