Statement of Duties

Examines a broad range of systems in any given site for compliance with City Ordinances and electrical fire and building codes while maintaining safe work practices. Performs a variety of routine and complex technical work in fire and building inspection work to ensure that the National Electrical and other related codes and standards are met.

Supervision

Works under the direction of the Director of BLS.

Performs varied and detailed inspection duties of a technical nature requiring exercise of considerable judgment in ensuring compliance with proper standards and the enforcement of pertinent laws and regulations. Confers with supervisor on difficult cases.

Job Environment

Some work is performed under typical office conditions; a significant portion of the workday may be spent outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions and to the hazards associated with construction sites. Workload may increase during seasonal changes, such as storms or during emergency situations, such as fires. Position also requires the employee to work on weekends and may be contacted at home at any time to respond to important situations.

Operates light truck and automobile, hand tools, inspection equipment; operates computer and standard office equipment, such as copier and facsimile.

Makes frequent contact with the general public, electricians, mechanical contractors; other city departments, including Board of Health, Fire Department, School Department; utility personnel, homeowners, builders, architects and contractors.

Errors in judgment could endanger life and property, endanger public safety and other employees, and/or have direct financial or legal repercussions.

Responsibilities

Enforces provisions of the New Hampshire Electrical Code receives, reviews electrical permit applications.

Inspects premises for which permits have been issued as the work progresses, and upon completion.

Performs electrical inspections examining for right size of panels, correct uses and sizes of wire, for correct number of circuits, for correct numbers and location of switches, etc. to ensure that national codes are adhered to.

Issues notice of violation for any permitted work inspected that is substandard.

May need to attend preconstruction meetings in order to explain inspection standards and procedures to architects, engineers, owners, contractors and developers.

Inspects all residential, commercial and industrial installations to ensure conformance to New Hampshire Electrical Code.

Informs electric utility of inspected property, which is authorized for connection.

Upon inspection of private property, prepare inspection reports of existing hazards for property owners.

Maintains thorough records of electrical inspection activity and completes related reports. Issues certificates and permits, as appropriate.

Educates licensed electricians/technicians on the State Electrical Code, and laws and regulations.

Provides information on proper electrical requirements and other pertinent information to property owners, other town officials, electricians, architects, attorneys, as needed and/or requested.

Coordinates inspections and appointments; maintains daily work sheet with inspection logs.

Responds to inquiries from other departments, State Electrical Board, and local utility on electrical codes, accepted requirements, laws and regulations.

Keeps updated and informed on the most current edition of the State Electrical Code and other pertinent laws and regulations.

Performs similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates.

Education & Experience
  • High school graduation, experience in the design and supervision of electrical systems installed for residential, commercial and industrial construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
  • Must obtain within one year of hire ICC Certification as Electrical Inspector & Electrical Plans Reviewer
  • New Hampshire Driver’s License
Preferred
  • New Hampshire Master Electrician’s License
