Position SummaryThe Elementary Computer Science Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-aligned instruction that introduces students to the fundamentals of computer science, digital literacy, and computational thinking. This teacher fosters a learning environment that emphasizes problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and responsible technology use. Through engaging, project-based lessons, the Computer Science Teacher equips students with 21st-century skills while reinforcing the school’s mission to advance science and technology through inquiry, innovation, and equity.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Displays a desire for raising student achievement through the integration of computer science, coding, and digital tools
- Designs and implements engaging computer science lessons aligned with New York State Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards
- Teaches foundational concepts such as algorithms, programming, networks, data, and digital citizenship through hands‑on activities and age‑appropriate platforms
- Incorporates block-based and text-based programming (e.g., Scratch, Code.org, Python) to build computational thinking and creative problem solving
- Writes and submits detailed weekly lesson plans that reflect instructional goals, differentiation strategies, and assessment opportunities
- Differentiates instruction based on student interests, needs, and ability levels to ensure equitable access to computer science education
- Promotes collaboration, perseverance, and innovation through team projects and real‑world coding challenges
- Develops student awareness of technology’s role in society, ethical computing, and responsible digital behavior
- Uses a variety of formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Introduces students to cross‑disciplinary applications of computer science, including in science, math, and the arts
- Promotes inquiry‑based learning and the design process in digital product creation
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to integrate computer science concepts into core subject areas and interdisciplinary projects
- Participates in team meetings to align instruction, analyze student data, and plan collaboratively
- Attends weekly PLC (Professional Learning Community) meetings to engage in professional dialogue, share instructional practices, and support school‑wide improvement goals
- Maintains an inclusive, student‑centered learning environment where all students feel safe to experiment, fail, and try again
- Communicates respectfully and consistently with parents/guardians about student progress and curriculum highlights
- Participates in school‑wide STEM events, family engagement activities, and student showcases
- Uses Google Workspace and other school‑supported platforms for lesson planning, calendaring, email communication, and digital portfolios
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of computer science principles and age‑appropriate programming platforms
- Familiarity with state and national computer science standards (e.g., NYS CS/DF Standards, CSTA Standards)
- Experience using coding tools and educational technology in elementary settings
- Understanding of CRSE (Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education) practices and ability to apply them in a digital learning environment
- Strong classroom management and organization skills, especially in a technology‑rich setting
- Ability to differentiate instruction and engage a wide range of learners in computational thinking
- Capacity to collaborate with general education teachers to enhance curriculum through tech integration
- Strong communication and digital presentation skills
- Commitment to self‑reflection, professional development, and instructional improvement
