SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

JOB TITLE: Pier Diem Substitute Teacher

POSITION GRADE: 82 [ Salary range: 30hr-35hr commensurate with education and experience]

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Education

SUPERVISOR: Director of Education

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Directors of Education, the Substitute Teacher is responsible for teaching students with special and general education needs, replacing the regularly appointed teacher in their absence. Provides as closely as possible the same instructional and learning environment that would exist if the regularly appointed teacher were in attendance. The substitute teacher is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans of the regularly appointed teacher for whom they are substituting.

Carries out all job responsibilities with fidelity and accountability to the Agency's Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and Strategic Plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Exercises full compliance with the Agency's Code of Conduct, all Agency policies and procedures and Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security for all client and staff related materials and/or records.
  • Supervises, escorts, and transitions students throughout the entire day and after school when needed.
  • Manages student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Exercises full compliance with the Justice Center's Code of Conduct for People with Special Needs.
  • Maintains productive learning environment within the classroom.
  • Maintains current knowledge in special education field.
  • Prepares IEP's, report cards, transcripts, progress notes, team reports and other written records; includes such written information to prepare for long term coverage situations.
  • Uses relevant technology to support instruction.
  • Demonstrates, promotes and practices cultural sensitivity towards students and staff through respect and understanding achieved through training and Agency cultural activities.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with each student to enhance and promote growth and development
  • Evaluates and records the academic progress and behavioral status of each student.
  • Attends planning and review conferences regarding students in class as scheduled.
  • Follows the lesson plan(s) left by the teacher for whom substituting for.
  • Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom where assigned.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Returns instructional materials and equipment to proper place.
  • Dismisses all students from the classroom before leaving the building.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, or parent/guardian in any public setting.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by program/building administrator(s) in accordance with school policies and practices.
POSITION SPECIFICS

Position Information:
  • Employment is on an as-needed basis.
  • Services may be needed for one day, one week, one month or longer.
  • All daily assignments are subject to possible cancellation (without compensation) at any time
  • Need for substitutes will vary from day-to-day and week-to-week and, as such, no guarantee can be given for work on any given day.
  • Supervised by Building or Program Administrator.
Education:
  • Candidate must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Substitutes with valid teaching certificate:
    Service may be rendered in any capacity, for any number of days. If employed on more than an itinerant basis, such persons will be employed in an area for which they are certified.
  • Substitutes without a valid certificate, but who are completing collegiate study toward certification at the rate of not less than six semester hours per year:
    Service may, with approval of the school agency, be rendered in any capacity, for any number of days. If employed on more than an itinerant basis, such persons will be employed in the area for which they are seeking certification.
  • Substitutes without a valid certificate and who are not working toward certification:
    Service may be rendered for no more than 40 days in a school year.
  • Candidate must agree to fingerprinting and background check.
  • Candidate must agree to 2 week of Onboarding Training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Sanctuary.
Other:
  • Aware and able to use current technology within the classroom;
    Must have flexibility, patience, and resiliency to deal with sudden crisis and deviation from work plans and schedules.
Experience and Skills:
  • Relevant teaching experience
  • Self-motivated, strong verbal and writing skills, attention to detail, problem-solving, flexible and adaptable
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies.
  • Possess problem-solving skills, imagination, patience, reasoning, creativity, judgment, and analytical abilities.
