*** Responsibilities:
** GENERAL PURPOSE This position has an initial appointment of 2 years and may end without renewed funding. The Ultrafast Plasma Photonics group at the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics invites applications for a Laboratory Engineer II. Under the supervision of the project PI, the successful candidate will modify, maintain, and run existing computational physics software dedicated to simulating a range of problems in nonlinear optics and high field physics.
As a member of an experimental physics group, the Laboratory Engineer II will be focused on performing computations that support our group’s experiments. As such, the successful candidate must be experienced in computational physics while simultaneously being knowledgeable in experimental details including laser technology and real-world limitations. The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: nonlinear optics simulations based on a nonlinear propagation equation, mid-IR solid state laser systems, mid-IR nonlinear optics, spatiotemporal structuring of laser light, and laser-plasma interactions.
** ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
*** Perform simulations using a parallelized nonlinear propagation code that was recently developed at the UR LLE (SUPPER code)
* Modify the existing SUPPER code to include second order nonlinear optics of crystals, additional vector components, and arbitrary spatial distributions.
* Perform computations to optimize various nonlinear optical elements include optical parametric amplifiers and nonlinear pulse compression in bulk media.
* Assist with the collection and analysis of experimental data including the development and management of DAQ systems when appropriate.
* Development and alignment of free-space optical systems and laser diagnostics.
* Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of short pulse master-oscillator power amplifier systems and other laboratory hardware.
* Prepare reports/presentations for internal use.
