Job Summary
Senior Engineer – Energy Systems position supports industrial/manufacturing client programs of the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology. The role uses technical expertise to reduce energy consumption in manufacturing and other industrial environments.
Job Responsibilities- Screen companies for energy‑efficiency opportunities, develop project proposals, and manage client relations.
- Collect and evaluate federal, state, and local data on economic levels and environmental focus areas to inform project selection.
- Choose and pursue the most impactful areas in alignment with Institute initiatives and available resources.
- Maintain regular communication with clients, manufacturing extension partners, NYSERDA, utilities, and related organizations.
- Provide hands‑on technical assistance to industry: assess processes, collect data, analyze consumption, and identify cost‑effective improvement opportunities.
- Conduct secondary research on new technologies and approach to identify energy‑saving solutions, including fossil‑fuel reductions.
- Perform experiments to assess feasibility and efficacy of client‑specific solutions.
- Lead and mentor junior staff; contribute as technical resource on projects led by others.
- Contribute to grant‑proposal development and content.
- Plan projects focusing on manufacturing energy and power assessment.
- Develop scopes of work, budgets, timelines, resource plans, and risk assessments.
- Execute projects, sourcing and scheduling consultants, collaborators, materials, and equipment.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams and manage client relationships.
- Monitor and control projects to meet schedule, budget, and goal objectives.
- Lead the writing of final technical reports, case studies, success stories, and articles.
- Identify, collect, and report on environmental metrics.
- Develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and professional training.
- Prepare and present monthly project progress reports.
Technology focused individual with 8+ years of work experience and a BS degree, or 7+ years of experience with an advanced degree. Experience must include direct work with energy efficiency of manufacturing or building systems, or analysis, design, or implementation of technologies focused on energy efficiency or renewables.
Required Qualifications- Strong fundamental understanding of electrical, thermal, or thermodynamic systems related to energy consumption.
- Understanding of business CAPEX investment decision processes and ROI.
- Ability to solve complex problems, with demonstrated skills in data analysis and statistical evaluation tools.
- Experience in formal report writing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Project management experience for schedule and budget tracking.
- Self‑motivated with strong organizational skills.
- Advanced business or technical degree.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing principles, equipment, and infrastructure, including lean manufacturing and process optimization.
Full‑time
CompensationWage Band: $79,100 – $132,500
