. This position is part of the Center on Access Technology, responsible for developing and improving captioning and accessibility solutions for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students and faculty.
The Technical Captionist is a member of a cross‑functional team that promotes research and development of access technologies. The role primarily involves providing live, real‑time captioning and supporting the CAT Software Development team in designing, testing, and maintaining captioning products.
Responsibilities- Provide real‑time captioning services for pilot and implementation testing of captioning solutions, including solutions developed by the NTID Center on Access Technology.
- Produce accurate, rapid translations of spoken information for live educational settings and other venues.
- Use consumer feedback to assess service effectiveness and recommend product improvements.
- Prepare for captioning assignments by reviewing relevant materials and ensuring clear understanding.
- Edit transcripts for content, grammar, punctuation, and spelling to ensure accuracy before distribution.
- Assist with and adapt communication to facilitate understanding between hearing and deaf individuals.
- Participate in the design, testing, and maintenance of CAT products and technologies.
- Provide technical and user support for captioning solutions, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues, training, and system implementation.
- Document bugs and technical issues for the development team.
- Represent NTID CAT on internal and external projects to support continuous improvement and develop captioning best practices.
- Work hours may include occasional evenings to meet service requests.
- Attend ASL classes, if able, to better facilitate communication with deaf and hard‑of‑hearing individuals.
- HS/GED or equivalent.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum typing speed of 65 WPM.
- Technical Captionist 1: salary range $20.04–$33.57/hr (no prior captioning experience required).
- Technical Captionist 2: salary range $21.95–$36.77/hr (requires 2–4 years of captioning experience).
- Ability to sit or stand for up to 90 minutes.
- Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems in high‑pressure settings.
- Ability to transport laptop and peripherals (up to 15 lb.).
- Operational knowledge of captioning systems and technologies.
- Strong critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- High‑level accuracy while multitasking and typing.
- Ability to coach or mentor others related to captioning technology.
